September 2026 ESG Calendar: Compliance Deadlines, Global Summits and Awareness Days

September is the busiest month in the ESG calendar outside COP season. Four major summits land across Dubai, London, Gandhinagar and New York, a consultation closes in New Zealand, fee notices go out in California, and standard setters in Brussels and Washington reach decision points that shape reporting well into 2027.

Here is the month in one place.

Compliance Deadlines

10 September, United States. The California Air Resources Board issues written fee determination notices to entities in scope of SB 253 and SB 261. Payment falls due within 60 days, with late fees applying after that. Every covered entity is assessed individually, including subsidiaries folded into a parent's consolidated report, although a parent may settle the whole amount in a single payment. If you expect a notice and do not receive one, that is worth chasing rather than treating as good news.

Throughout September, United States. Preparation continues toward California's deferred first Scope 1 and 2 reporting deadline of 10 November 2026. Confirm the final date before relying on it, since the deferral was still completing administrative approval.

Throughout September, Malaysia. Group 2 companies under the National Sustainability Reporting Framework are in their first measurement year, covering financial years commencing on or after 1 January 2026. The data being generated now is what gets disclosed.

Throughout September, Hong Kong. LargeCap issuers are inside their first mandatory Part D climate reporting year, for financial years commencing on or after 1 January 2026.

Throughout September, European Union. EUDR compliance preparation continues ahead of 30 December 2026 for large and medium operators and traders. Roughly three months remain, and plot-level geolocation work cannot be compressed.

Open Consultations

30 September, New Zealand. The External Reporting Board's consultation on its draft climate reporting roadmap closes. The proposal would replace the Aotearoa New Zealand Climate Standards with NZ IFRS S2, with early adoption from reporting periods commencing on or after 1 October 2026 and mandatory application from 1 January 2033. Two questions carry real workload consequences: whether scenario analysis remains prescribed at three scenarios, and how industry-based guidance is handled. If either affects you, this is the month to respond.

1 October, New Zealand. Immediately after the consultation closes, NZ IFRS S2 would become available for early adoption for reporting periods commencing on or after this date, should the roadmap proceed as drafted.

Standard-Setter Milestones

During September, Brussels. Adoption of the two delegated acts amending the EU Taxonomy Climate and Environmental Delegated Acts is targeted for the third quarter of 2026, which ends this month. The revised technical screening criteria are expected to apply from 2026 reporting periods with no transitional reliefs currently proposed, so the financial year now running is affected.

During September, globally. The Greenhouse Gas Protocol's Scope 2 Technical Working Group reconvenes to reconcile consultation feedback that rejected hourly matching and deliverability by wide margins. Watch for signals on whether the redraft offers multiple reporting approaches rather than a single mandatory method.

During September, California. CARB continues industry listening sessions ahead of publishing draft regulations for 2027 SB 253 reporting, including the proposed five-category Scope 3 phase-in and assurance requirements.

Looking to October. Three items land just beyond the month and are worth positioning for now. The ISSB is targeting publication of its nature-related disclosures exposure draft around CBD COP17, with a 120-day comment period. The European Supervisory Authorities are due to deliver technical advice on the EU Taxonomy Disclosures Delegated Act. And the FCA's policy statement on UK SRS listing rules is expected in the autumn.

Global Summits

7 to 8 September, Dubai. The World ESG Summit and Awards 2026 takes place at the Metropolitan Hotel. Now in its seventh edition and third time in Dubai, it brings together policymakers, corporate executives, investors and regulators across government, banking and finance, energy and utilities, real estate and construction, and petrochemicals. Useful if your exposure is Gulf-weighted, particularly given the UAE federal climate law now in force across the Emirates including free zones.

8 to 9 September, London. Sustainability LIVE: The London Summit and Awards 2026 runs at the QEII Centre in Westminster. Organised by Sustainability Magazine and co-located with Procurement and Supply Chain LIVE, it expects more than 1,000 senior executives across 50 speakers, ten content themes and four workshops. The co-location is the point: climate disclosure and supply chain decarbonisation increasingly sit in the same conversation, and Scope 3 is where most reporting programmes are struggling.

8 to 12 September, Singapore. At One Impact Week 2026 convenes at the Suntec Convention Centre under the theme of the well-being economy, spanning climate and nature, energy transition, food systems, circular economy and human development. Relevant timing for Singapore's STI constituents, now inside their first mandatory Scope 3 year.

15 to 18 September, Gandhinagar. The World Circular Economy Forum 2026 is hosted at the Mahatma Mandir convention centre in Gujarat. This is the tenth edition and the first ever held in South Asia, organised jointly by the Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra and India's Central Pollution Control Board, with support from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and the Government of Gujarat. The theme is circular economy transition for people and prosperity. The main forum on 15 and 16 September carries four plenaries, sixteen parallel sessions and an expo, with accelerator sessions on 17 and 18 September held in Gandhinagar, online and globally. Two practical notes: in-person attendance is by invitation only, while online participation is open to everyone free of charge.

20 to 27 September, New York. Climate Week NYC 2026 runs across the city alongside the UN General Assembly. Organised by Climate Group since 2009, this year's edition is themed around energy, impact and the action driven collectively. The structure is worth understanding before you plan: an Opening Ceremony on 21 September, followed by The Hub Live on 21 and 22 September as the curated core programme, sitting inside a citywide Events Program of more than 1,000 sessions spanning climate finance, energy transition, nature and biodiversity, cities and infrastructure, industrial decarbonisation, adaptation and just transition.

Two practical notes. The main programme and the citywide list are different things, and individual listings carry their own times, venues and access rules, so work from the official calendar rather than summary pages. And Midtown accommodation books out when UN week and Climate Week stack, so book early and refundable where possible.

United Nations General Assembly

Two UNGA dates frame the month and drive demand across New York.

8 September. Opening of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly at UN Headquarters.

22 to 28 September. UNGA High-Level Week, with the General Debate beginning on 22 September. This is the week Climate Week NYC overlaps with, and the overlap is what gives the New York cluster its weight, putting climate priorities alongside diplomacy and global finance in the same city at the same moment.

United Nations Awareness Days

5 September. International Day of Charity.

7 September. International Day of Clean Air for blue skies. Sits neatly alongside the Dubai summit opening the same day, and is a natural anchor for air quality and pollution prevention content.

8 September. International Literacy Day.

15 September. International Day of Democracy.

16 September. International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, marking the Montreal Protocol. Still the strongest available case study in successful international environmental cooperation.

18 September. International Equal Pay Day. Relevant to the social pillar and to pay gap reporting obligations across several jurisdictions.

19 September. World Cleanup Day, falling on the third Saturday.

21 September. International Day of Peace, also observed by many organisations as Zero Emissions Day.

23 September. International Day of Sign Languages.

26 September. International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.

27 September. World Tourism Day.

29 September. International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste. Well timed against the circular economy agenda running at Gandhinagar two weeks earlier.

30 September. International Translation Day.

Planning Notes

The month has three clusters. Dubai, London and Singapore fall in the first ten days. Gandhinagar sits mid-month. New York occupies the final full week, with Climate Week and UNGA High-Level Week overlapping from 22 September. If you are choosing between them, the first cluster is corporate and practitioner-facing, Gandhinagar is policy and circular economy focused, and New York is where finance and diplomacy intersect.

Book New York early. Climate Week and UNGA High-Level Week stack in the same days, and Midtown fills accordingly.

Two deadlines need action rather than attention. The California fee notice on 10 September starts a 60-day clock. The New Zealand consultation closing 30 September is the last opportunity to influence a framework that runs to 2033.

Watch Brussels quietly. The Taxonomy criteria adoption is the least visible item on this list and potentially the most consequential, because it is expected to apply to the reporting year already underway.

Position as of late August 2026. Event dates, formats and venues should be reconfirmed with organisers before making travel arrangements. Regulatory dates reflect the position at the time of writing and several remain subject to adoption or administrative approval. Confirm current requirements with the relevant regulator.
