Environmental, social and governance (ESG) data management software gathers the sustainability figures an organisation reports, checks them and records where each one came from. Inputs range from utility bills and meter readings to human resources (HR) and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, environment, health and safety (EHS) records and supplier questionnaires.
It is a different job from writing the report or calculating a carbon footprint. Disclosure software turns approved figures into a published statement, and carbon accounting tools build a greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory. Data management sits underneath both, holding metric definitions, evidence, owners, calculation rules and approval histories. Many platforms cover all three functions, but their underlying data-management capabilities still need to be assessed separately.
The same figures now feed several regimes. Companies still in scope of the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) after the 2026 Omnibus changes need limited assurance on reports prepared under the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS). The IFRS Foundation says more than 45 jurisdictions are adopting or otherwise using International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) standards, and California’s first Scope 1 and 2 reports under Senate Bill (SB) 253 are due in November 2026.
In practice, a buyer needs to be able to trace a reported figure back to its source, see who changed it and reuse it across reporting frameworks without keying it in again. This guide is for heads of sustainability, ESG reporting leads, financial controllers, risk and EHS managers, and the IT and procurement teams running a software selection. It compares ten platforms on those three points and notes where each falls short.

How We Chose These ESG Data Management Platforms
We started from platforms built to collect, validate and store ESG data across an organisation, rather than tools limited to calculating emissions or producing a report, then judged each against six criteria. We reviewed vendor product documentation, company announcements, published customer examples and independent buyer guides available up to October 2026; analyst recognitions are reported as the vendors describe them. This is an editorial comparison, not a hands-on test, so use our notes to plan your own demos.
| Data capture | connectors to ERP, HR, utility, metering and EHS systems, plus structured requests to suppliers and contributors, so that less data arrives by spreadsheet. |
| Coverage | environmental, social and governance metrics, including qualitative evidence, not emissions alone. |
| Traceability and controls | audit trails, approval steps, visible calculation logic, evidence attached to each figure and data quality checks that help prepare for limited assurance. |
| Organisational complexity | consolidation across subsidiaries, sites, units and reporting periods, including restatements when the group structure changes. |
| Framework reuse | mapping of collected data to the CSRD, ISSB standards, the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), CDP and other frameworks, kept current as those frameworks change. |
| Fit and vendor position | a clear target customer and a stable position in a changing market. UL Solutions sold its health and safety software in 2026 but kept UL 360, and Microsoft retired several sustainability data components between October 2025 and January 2026. |
We left out standalone carbon calculators, ESG ratings providers and services where consulting matters more than software. Industry lists show representative sectors, not every deployment. Founding dates refer to the company or its predecessor; for products sold inside larger software suites, the year the product launched is given. Software helps prepare evidence for assurance, but it does not replace assurance or establish compliance on its own.
Top 10 ESG Data Management Software Platforms
The list starts with platforms built mainly for collecting and validating ESG data, then moves through finance-led, EHS-led and ERP or cloud-based options. The order reflects our editorial view of each platform’s fit for ESG data management; it is not a numerical score.
1. IBM Envizi
Utility bills, interval meter readings and fuel records supply most of the environmental figures a company reports, and Envizi was built to collect them. Founded in Sydney in 2004 and acquired by IBM in 2022, it holds energy, emissions, water and waste data at site and asset level, checks it automatically and passes it to reporting frameworks.
Key Features
| Automated data capture | Envizi pulls data from ERP systems, Internet of Things (IoT) and metering platforms, utility providers, spreadsheets and supplier portals. |
| Data health checks | Automated tests look for gaps and errors in completeness, accuracy and timeliness before figures reach a report. Every change is logged. |
| Organisational modelling | Regions, sites, assets, product lines and joint ventures are modelled individually and rolled up to match the reporting boundary. |
| GHG Protocol calculations | Scope 1 and 2 calculations follow the Greenhouse Gas Protocol. Scope 3, supplier engagement and financed emissions are separate modules. |
| Framework questionnaire library | More than 1,000 questions from major frameworks sit in a managed library, with workflows and approvals around each answer. |
Industries Served
- Commercial real estate
- Retail
- Manufacturing
- Banking and financial services
- Transport and logistics
Pros
- Data is held at the level of individual meters, bills and assets, giving auditors a clear path from source record to reported total.
- Answers in the framework library carry over from earlier years and across frameworks, cutting repeat work in each reporting cycle.
- Ikano Group, with six businesses on three continents, tracks 15,685 data types in Envizi and gives its auditors direct access, according to IBM.
Cons
- Social and governance metrics rely mainly on the questionnaire library rather than automated capture; test how HR and governance data would be collected.
- Scope 3, supplier engagement and financed emissions are sold as separate modules, so compare proposals on the modules you actually need.
- Publication-ready, tagged reports are outside its main focus. CSRD filers may need to pair it with disclosure software.
Best For
Worth shortlisting when most of the effort goes into collecting energy, water, waste and emissions data from many sites and meters. If social metrics or the final disclosure are the bigger task, test those areas first.
2. Sweep
Coordinating large numbers of data contributors across subsidiaries and countries is the problem Sweep was designed around. Founded in 2020, with offices in Paris and London, it runs collection as campaigns with named owners, validation steps and reminders. What comes back is calculated, version-controlled and mapped to the CSRD, ISSB standards, GRI, CDP and several US and UK rules.
Key Features
| Collection campaigns | Questionnaires, surveys and file imports run as campaigns with assigned owners and reminders, and progress is tracked by entity. |
| Validation workflows | Roles, review steps and comments are built into each campaign before data is accepted. |
| Evidence and auditor access | Audit trails run from raw input to the filed disclosure. Figures and narrative are version-controlled, and auditors work through their own interface. |
| Revised ESRS tracking | For each datapoint, Sweep shows the requirement under the simplified ESRS and what changed from the previous version. |
| Carbon accounting and AI drafting | Emissions are calculated in the platform, and AI drafts disclosure responses from live data. |
Industries Served
- Consumer goods and beauty
- Telecommunications
- Energy and utilities
- Aerospace
- Manufacturing
Pros
- The campaign structure keeps large contributor networks on schedule, with progress visible for each entity.
- Carbon and wider ESG data share the same collection and review workflow instead of sitting in separate tools.
- Named customers include L’Oréal, Swisscom, Orange, SSE and Airbus, according to Sweep.
Cons
- Much of the data arrives through questionnaires and file imports; ask which ERP and HR connectors are available for your systems.
- Tagging inside annual report software is not its focus. Groups filing an integrated report may need a separate disclosure tool.
- Its named customers are mainly large European groups; US-centred companies should test the depth of US framework content in a demo.
Best For
Shortlist Sweep if the hard part is getting many contributors across entities and countries to submit, review and approve data on time. If figures must be tagged inside your annual report software, plan for a separate disclosure tool.
3. Workiva
Finance teams that already prepare annual reports or US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filings in Workiva can run ESG data through the same controls, linking and audit trail. Founded in 2008 in Ames, Iowa, the company connects sustainability figures to source systems and updates every report that uses a value when that value changes.
Key Features
| Linked data | Change a figure at source and every table and narrative that uses it updates, across sustainability, financial and regulatory reports. |
| Pre-built connectors | More than 60 connectors bring in data from ERP, HR and EHS systems, and Workiva Carbon handles GHG calculations. |
| Audit and assurance hub | Evidence, change history and control testing are stored together for internal audit and the assurance provider. |
| Tagged output | Sustainability statements can be tagged in eXtensible Business Reporting Language (XBRL) alongside the annual report. |
| Workiva AI | Narrative is drafted from approved data, shortening the writing phase. |
Industries Served
- Financial services and insurance
- Technology and telecommunications
- Pharmaceuticals and biotechnology
- Airlines and transport
- Consumer goods and retail
Pros
- Finance can apply its existing disclosure controls and review cycles to ESG data instead of building new ones.
- Sustainability figures and financial statements draw on linked source data, which reduces reconciliation between reports.
- Named CSRD customers include Nokia, Air France-KLM and Bavarian Nordic, according to Workiva.
Cons
- Site-level operational data, such as meter readings, depends on connectors and Workiva Carbon; test how your environmental data would arrive.
- A company with no other reporting in Workiva will pay for more platform than ESG data management alone needs.
- Pricing is quote-based and varies with modules and users.
Best For
Choose Workiva if the CFO wants ESG data under the same controls and review cycle as the financial statements. A company with no other reporting in Workiva should compare its cost with specialist platforms.
4. Wolters Kluwer Enablon
Large industrial groups often keep their most detailed environmental data in EHS and process safety systems, and Enablon was built around them. Founded near Paris in 2000 and bought by Wolters Kluwer for €250 million in 2016, it combines EHS, operational risk and ESG data. Since 2023 it has drawn on CCH Tagetik for reporting and disclosure.
Key Features
| Data from many sources | Enablon ESG Excellence, launched in April 2023, collects, unifies and validates ESG data from more than 100 decentralised sources. |
| Connected EHS and risk data | Environment, health and safety, operational risk and process safety data share a cloud platform with ESG metrics. |
| Framework mapping and workflow | Data is mapped to the CSRD, GRI and Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB) standards, and workflow management follows each value from source to disclosure. |
| CCH Tagetik disclosure | Reporting and disclosure functions from CCH Tagetik, Wolters Kluwer’s performance management software, let ESG data be reported alongside financial data. |

Pros
- EHS, risk and ESG teams work from shared operational records, cutting duplicate collection.
- Disclosure work can pass to CCH Tagetik without re-keying, linking operational and financial reporting.
- A System and Organization Controls (SOC) 2 Type 2 report and native iOS and Android apps support IT security review and data entry in the field.
Cons
- Enablon and CCH Tagetik are separate products, so confirm which components a proposal includes.
- ERP Research found no public evidence of Scope 3 calculation, an emission factor library or supplier engagement tools; test these areas in a demo.
- There is no published list of certified ERP connectors, and integration is scoped project by project.
Best For
Best when industrial teams already hold much of the ESG data in EHS, process safety and risk systems. If Scope 3 and supplier data are your main need, test those areas before choosing it.
5. Intelex
Since 1992, Toronto-based Intelex has sold environment, health, safety and quality software, and it has been part of Fortive since Fortive’s Industrial Scientific unit bought it in 2019. Its ESG Management Software runs on the same platform, adding emission factor libraries, an ESRS content pack and target tracking. Intelex reports more than 1,400 clients across its products.
Key Features
| Emission factor libraries | Pre-loaded libraries cover Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions plus water and waste, filtered by industry, regulator and job site. Users can also define their own calculations. |
| ESRS content pack | An ESRS Data Summary for CSRD organises the required data, and CDP reporting is supported. |
| Guided data entry | Pre-configured forms, dashboards and guided entry standardise collection. Intelex’s services team helps import historical data from legacy sources. |
| Targets and programme management | Targets, tasks and sub-tasks are assigned to stakeholders, and a workflow engine escalates overdue items. |
| Double materiality through Datamaran | An integration with Datamaran’s AI supports double materiality assessments. |
Industries Served

- Automotive
- Packaging
- Waste and environmental services
Pros
- Environmental compliance and ESG data share an EHS platform, so permits, incidents and emissions records do not need separate collection.
- Automatic escalation keeps ESG targets and actions moving without manual chasing.
- A Snowflake integration, added in 2023, makes ESG data available for analysis alongside other company data.
Cons
- Its ESG product page does not mention GRI, ISSB standards or assurance support; check coverage in a demo.
- Its main analyst recognition for ESG data, a Verdantix Leader position, dates from 2023, so ask for recent customer references.
- Companies without an EHS programme on Intelex will be buying into a broad platform; compare scope and cost with specialist tools.
Best For
Suited to industrial companies already running EHS or quality programmes on Intelex that want ESG reporting built on the same records. If ISSB or GRI reporting is central, confirm coverage before shortlisting.
6. SAP Sustainability Control Tower
Where finance, HR and operations already run on SAP S/4HANA, SAP Sustainability Control Tower draws ESG metrics from those systems rather than from spreadsheets. Launched in 2021, it maps the data to predefined models for the CSRD, ISSB standards and other frameworks, then applies validation and release steps modelled on a financial close.
Key Features
| Predefined data models | SAP provides structures for the CSRD, the EU Taxonomy, ISSB climate disclosures (IFRS S2) and other frameworks, and companies can add their own metrics. |
| Native SAP data | Finance, HR, real estate and operations data already held in SAP feeds the metrics directly. |
| Materiality-based scoping | Results of the double materiality assessment decide which metrics, organisational levels and data sources are in scope. |
| Validation and period close | Completeness checks and data release steps mirror the discipline of a financial close. |
| AI-generated draft reports | SAP report templates can be filled automatically from the available ESG data to produce a first draft. |
Industries Served
- Manufacturing
- Consumer products
- Chemicals
- Utilities
- Retail
Pros
- Reuses the master data, organisational structures and controls of an existing SAP landscape.
- Sustainability and financial figures start from the same source records, which cuts reconciliation work.
- Calculates GHG emissions for all scopes using spend-based and activity-based methods, allocated across finance, HR and operational structures.
Cons
- Data held outside SAP needs integration work, and the benefit shrinks as that share grows; map your non-SAP sources before a demo.
- Double materiality results are imported from Excel or a partner tool rather than run in the product.
- Related capabilities sit in separate SAP products, such as Sustainability Footprint Management for product carbon data, so check what a proposal includes.
Best For
Best when most operational and financial data already lives in SAP S/4HANA. If much of your data sits in non-SAP systems, weigh the integration effort before committing.
7. Microsoft Sustainability Manager
Organisations standardised on Microsoft Power Platform and Dynamics 365 can manage ESG data in Sustainability Manager, generally available since June 2022. It stores environmental, social and governance metrics in a common Microsoft data model and calculates Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions. Microsoft’s 2026 release plan adds a green ledger view linked to Dynamics 365 Finance.
Key Features
| Common data model | Emissions, water, waste and social and governance metrics share a Microsoft schema, organised by organisational unit, facility and region. |
| Data connections | Direct connections and automated imports bring in data from business systems, and Azure and Power Platform tools can extend calculations with custom formulas. |
| Calculation versions | Scope 1, 2 and 3 models apply chosen emission factor libraries, and the 2026 release plan adds multiple calculation versions for comparing methods. |
| Data trail | A data trail report links a reported value to the inputs and calculations behind it, and auditing can be switched on to log changes. |
| External reporting | Standards and assessments cover external frameworks, including ESRS areas, with dashboards for emissions, renewable energy, water and waste. |
Industries Served
- Manufacturing
- Retail and consumer goods
- Financial services
- Energy and utilities
- Public sector
Pros
- Teams with Microsoft skills can extend data models and calculations with Azure and Power Platform tools rather than waiting for a vendor release.
- Microsoft’s 2026 release plan adds reporting-period locks, giving auditors a fixed version of each period alongside the data trail.
- Social and governance metrics share the data model with environmental data, so workforce figures sit alongside emissions.
Cons
- Microsoft has retired several neighbouring components since October 2025, including the Purview CSRD template and invoice data capture, and moved its Fabric sustainability data solutions to GitHub. Ask for the roadmap in writing.
- Configuration and extension rely on Power Platform and Azure skills; check whether your team or a partner has them.
- Some capabilities, including Copilot data queries, have been labelled preview in Microsoft’s documentation, so confirm which features are generally available.
Best For
Useful for organisations that run Dynamics 365 or Power Platform and can configure it in-house or through a partner. Teams wanting a packaged, vendor-managed service should compare specialist platforms.
8. UL Solutions (UL 360)
Product testing and certification are UL Solutions’ core business, but its UL 360 software has managed sustainability data since UL bought the Cambridge-based cr360 in 2016. In 2026 the company sold its employee health and safety software and kept UL 360 within its ULTRUS range, which covers product safety, supply chain transparency and enterprise sustainability.
Key Features
| Automated intake | Data arrives from meters, business systems and internal platforms through scheduled API imports, secure file transfer and integrations such as Siemens Building X. |
| Data quality checks | Missing, late or unusual values are flagged automatically, and rules-based estimates drawn from historical data fill gaps. |
| Emissions audit trail | Each emissions value is linked to its source, calculation method, supporting documents, review history and approvals. Final calculations and sign-off stay with people. |
| Supplier and product data | Suppliers submit Scope 3 and product carbon footprint data directly, and AI can read a bill of materials to calculate a product footprint. |
| Framework coverage | Reporting supports the CSRD, ISSB standards, CDP, GRI, California’s climate laws and the Sustainability Standards Board of Japan (SSBJ) standards. |
Industries Served
- Manufacturing
- Consumer products
- Chemicals
- Electronics and technology
- Commercial real estate
Pros
- A per-value evidence trail shortens the work of answering an assurance provider’s questions about a specific emissions figure.
- All 15 Scope 3 categories are supported, with pre-configured and configurable calculation methods.
- Supplier outreach and completeness tracking run inside the platform rather than by email and spreadsheet.
Cons
- Its product page names no customers; ask for references from companies in your sector.
- UL Solutions sold its health and safety software in 2026, so buyers wanting ESG and EHS records from one vendor should compare EHS-led platforms.
- ULTRUS modules for Scope 3, product footprints and disclosures are described separately, so check which ones a proposal includes.
Best For
Best suited to companies that need a detailed evidence trail for emissions, especially where supplier and product carbon data are part of the job. If you want ESG and EHS records from one supplier, compare it with Cority, Intelex or Enablon.
9. Cority
Cority began in 1985 as Medgate, a Toronto developer of occupational health software, and took its current name in 2017. Its CorityOne platform now spans environment, health, safety, quality and sustainability, so ESG metrics can draw on compliance records the business already keeps. Thoma Bravo has been majority owner since 2019.
Key Features
| Audit-ready data workflows | ESG data is captured, validated and managed across systems, with review steps before figures are accepted. |
| GHG accounting | Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions are calculated using a library of more than one million emission factors. |
| Framework reporting | Reports align with GRI, CDP, SASB, the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) recommendations and the CSRD. |
| Targets and initiatives | Sustainability goals are set and tracked, and initiatives are linked to progress against them. |
| Cortex AI | AI aggregates data from operations and supports risk and opportunity analytics and dashboards, with human review at each step. |
Industries Served
- Manufacturing
- Energy and utilities
- Ports and transport
- Technology
- Healthcare and life sciences
Pros
- Safety, occupational health and environmental records collected for compliance can feed ESG metrics without a separate collection round.
- The emission factor library covers all three scopes, reducing the need for a separate carbon tool.
- Customers include Associated British Ports, Hypertherm and Fujitsu, according to Cority.
Cons
- Most of the value comes when EHS data also lives in Cority. Buyers needing only ESG reporting should compare scope and price with specialist tools.
- ISSB standards are not listed among the frameworks on its sustainability page; check coverage of IFRS S1 and S2 in a demo.
- Water, waste and air data sit in its separate Environmental Cloud products, so confirm which modules a proposal includes.
Best For
A good fit when occupational health, safety and environmental records already shape your ESG reporting. If ESG reporting is a standalone project, compare its scope and set-up time with specialist platforms.
10. Diligent ESG
Board directors are the audience Diligent knows best: the New York company sells board management and governance, risk and compliance (GRC) software. It moved into ESG data in 2021 by buying Accuvio, a sustainability software firm based in Limerick, and Diligent ESG now runs on the Diligent One platform beside risk and compliance programmes, with dashboards designed for board reporting.
Key Features
| Sustainability data collection | Energy and sustainability data is collected, cleansed, analysed and reported across more than 2,000 fuels and business activities, covering Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions. |
| Stakeholder surveys | Surveys reach employees, suppliers and other stakeholders on any device, and existing data pre-fills ESG assessments. |
| Automated monitoring | Robotic process automation watches ESG metrics and alerts owners when a value raises a red flag. |
| Framework mapping | Metrics are mapped across TCFD, CDP, GRI, SASB and World Economic Forum metrics, plus internal benchmarks. |
| Board Reporting for ESG | Launched in 2023, board dashboards track progress against carbon targets and set ESG scores from Clarity AI and S&P Global against industry averages. |
Industries Served
- Financial services
- Software and technology
- Manufacturing
- Energy
- Healthcare
- Public sector
Pros
- ESG data sits on the same platform as board, risk and compliance work, so directors see sustainability alongside other governance information.
- Surveys can reach large numbers of employees and suppliers without a separate survey tool.
- Data captured once can be reused across several reports through the Author tool.
Cons
- Its ESG product page does not name the CSRD or ISSB standards, although its help documentation describes CSRD report authoring; test how ESRS content is structured.
- The product page describes collection as auditable without showing the trail; ask to see how a changed figure is logged and approved.
- Value is highest for existing Diligent customers. Buyers without its board or GRC tools should compare scope and price with specialist platforms.
Best For
Organisations whose board, audit committee or risk function oversees ESG and already uses Diligent for governance. Teams needing detailed site and meter data capture should test it against capture-led platforms.
How to Choose the Right ESG Data Management Software
Start with your most difficult data sources and the figures that cause the most rework today. The five checks below separate platforms that look alike in a sales presentation. Ask each vendor to show every point in its own product, using a sample of your data rather than slides.
Map Your Data Sources, Owners and Reports
List the figures you report, where each comes from, who owns it and how often it changes. Then list every report those figures feed, from the CSRD statement and ISSB-based filings to CDP, customer questionnaires and board packs. Ask each vendor which connections are native, which need an API and which depend on manual uploads.
Obligations keep moving. In February 2026, Omnibus I limited the CSRD to companies with more than 1,000 employees and more than €450 million in net turnover, and revised ESRS apply from financial year 2027. The California Air Resources Board (CARB) approved its SB 253 regulations on 12 October 2026, with Scope 3 reporting from 2027.
Change a Source Value and Follow It Through
Pick one environmental figure, such as Scope 2 emissions for a large site, and one social figure, such as employee turnover. Ask the vendor to change a source value during the demo and show what happens next: unit conversion, calculation, validation, approval and the reported total. Check who changed what and when, which evidence supports it and whether your assurance provider can get read-only access.
Ask too how estimates are labelled and how earlier periods stay reproducible when an emission factor changes. UL 360’s per-value audit trail and Microsoft’s planned calculation versions show the kind of answer to look for.
Test Entity Boundaries and Restatements
Groups report by site, subsidiary, country and consolidated total, and the boundary used for emissions can differ from the financial one. Ask each vendor to show an acquisition, a disposal and a restated prior year without losing the original record. Envizi and SAP model organisational structures in detail; check how the others handle the same changes.
Decide Which System Holds the Approved Figure
Several platforms here both manage data and produce disclosures, and some groups will use two tools. Decide which system holds the approved value and which writes the report. Workiva, Diligent and Enablon, through CCH Tagetik, lean towards disclosure, while Envizi, UL 360 and the EHS platforms lean towards capture.
Ask how values pass between systems, how approvals survive the hand-off and who maintains framework mappings. The revised ESRS cut mandatory datapoints by more than 60%, so data collected under the 2023 version must map cleanly to the new set.
Compare Roadmaps, Exit Terms and Total Cost
Product plans change. Microsoft moved its Fabric sustainability data solutions to GitHub in November 2025 and deprecated invoice data capture from January 2026, and UL Solutions sold its health and safety software in 2026. Ask for the roadmap of the modules you rely on, and agree data export rights and formats before you sign.
Request proposals that separate software, add-on modules, emission factor libraries, implementation, integrations and support. For EHS-led and enterprise platforms, configuration and partner work can make up much of the cost.
Which ESG Data Management Software Is Right for Your Needs?
| Business Type | Recommended Type of Provider | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Multi-site or asset-heavy enterprise | Operational data capture platform (IBM Envizi) | Collects meter, utility and site data automatically and checks it before reporting. |
| Company needing a detailed emissions evidence trail | Specialist ESG data platform (UL Solutions UL 360) | Links each emissions value to its source, method and approvals, and collects supplier and product data. |
| Large group with many data contributors | Collection-led platform (Sweep) | Runs data requests as campaigns with owners, validation and auditor access. |
| Listed company filing an integrated annual report | Connected reporting platform (Workiva) | Places ESG data under the same controls, links and audit trail as the financial statements. |
| Organisation where the board or risk function oversees ESG | Governance platform with ESG module (Diligent ESG) | Puts ESG data and board dashboards beside risk and compliance programmes. |
| Manufacturer with an established EHS programme | EHS-led platform (Cority, Intelex) | Reuses environmental, health and safety records in ESG reporting. |
| Energy, chemicals or process industry group | EHS and operational risk platform (Wolters Kluwer Enablon) | Connects ESG with EHS, process safety and risk data, with CCH Tagetik for disclosure. |
| SAP S/4HANA customer | ERP-embedded sustainability (SAP Sustainability Control Tower) | Draws ESG metrics from the master data and controls already in SAP. |
| Organisation standardised on Microsoft | Platform-native sustainability app (Microsoft Sustainability Manager) | Builds on existing licences, skills, security settings and data connections. |
| Small or medium-sized company answering customer requests | Structured templates such as the EU’s Voluntary Sustainability Reporting Standard for small and medium-sized enterprises (VSME) | A small set of well-documented metrics often covers customer requests; buy a platform once reporting spans many sites or frameworks. |
Conclusion
Choosing the right ESG data management software matters because every sustainability report, CDP response and board update depends on the figures underneath it. A good platform shows where each number came from, who approved it and how it was calculated, so the same data can serve several frameworks and stand up to an assurance review.
The right choice usually follows where your data already lives. A group running on SAP or Microsoft may get furthest with the sustainability app in that stack, while an industrial company with mature EHS systems may gain most from Cority, Intelex or Enablon. A listed company may want ESG figures under its financial reporting controls, and a business with many sites may need automated meter and utility capture before anything else.
Start from your internal priorities: which reports you must produce, which figures cause the most rework and who will own the data. Shortlist two or three platforms, test each by changing and tracing a few of your own figures from source to report, and compare proposals that separate software, implementation and data costs. If your reports are assured, ask your assurance provider to look at a sample audit trail during the trial.
