As AI workloads generate exponentially growing volumes of data, storing that data at higher density, meaning more data capacity per physical drive, reduces the number of physical units, the amount of rack space and the cooling capacity a data centre needs to hold a given volume of information. Western Digital's Malaysia operations sit within its broader global sustainability roadmap, which targets 100 percent carbon-free energy by fiscal year 2030 and net-zero Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by fiscal year 2032. Its Sarawak facility has already achieved 100 percent Scope 2 market-based emissions reduction since fiscal year 2024, secured through a Renewable Energy Certificate agreement with Sarawak Energy. That mechanism allows the facility to claim its purchased electricity as effectively carbon-free by purchasing certificates tied to renewable generation elsewhere on the grid, a market-based accounting approach rather than a guarantee that the specific electrons powering the facility are physically renewable.
It is worth noting that much of the substance behind this announcement restates targets and achievements already in place rather than introducing new quantified commitments, with the storage efficiency framing serving primarily to connect those existing goals to the current moment of AI-driven demand growth.
