A new entrant in the global clean-energy landscape is taking aim at one of the sector’s most persistent challenges: how to deliver reliable, zero-carbon power to locations that cannot depend on large grids or pipelines. California-based Voya Energy has officially launched with a thirteen million dollar seed round to scale a technology that transforms recycled metals into a carbon-free fuel source. The company claims its approach could redefine how distributed power is generated and transported at a time when the world is searching for alternatives to fossil-based backup systems. The funding round positions Voya to begin demonstrating whether metal fuels can become a practical, scalable pillar in the clean-energy transition.

A New Player with Deep Energy-Tech Pedigree

Voya’s founding team is composed of leaders who have played prominent roles in the battery, energy storage and electric mobility sectors. Chief Executive Richard Wang previously led Cuberg, a battery-technology company known for next-generation lithium-metal innovation. Chief Commercial Officer Matt Horton brings experience from Voltera and Rivian, where he oversaw charging and energy solutions. Chief Technology Officer Steven Kaye previously held the same role at energy-storage company Our Next Energy. Together, the team is attempting to build a new category of fuel that capitalises on metals’ high energy density and safety characteristics. Their goal is to create energy units that are easy to ship, store and deploy, providing power in situations where traditional electricity networks are constrained or absent. Wang described the company’s mission as a response to a bottleneck facing the clean-energy transition: demand for renewable power is rising rapidly, but the infrastructure required to deliver and store that power is not expanding at the same pace. He said that metal fuels provide a pathway to high-reliability, low-carbon energy that can operate independently of the grid.

How Metal Fuels Could Reshape Distributed Energy?

The concept of metal-based fuels is not entirely new, but Voya argues that previous attempts have struggled with cost, complexity and safety. The company says its breakthrough lies in turning recycled metals into a form of energy storage that can be transported without the hazards associated with compressed gases, liquid fuels or reactive chemicals. If the technology scales as promised, it could enable rapid deployment of clean power in remote communities, industrial sites, disaster-response zones and military operations. It could also serve as a cleaner substitute for diesel generators, which remain one of the largest carbon emitters in backup-power applications. Voya’s model imagines an ecosystem in which metals are charged using renewable electricity, shipped as a stable fuel, used to generate power on site and then returned for recycling and recharge. The thirteen million dollar seed round was led by Energy Impact Partners, a global investment firm with a long track record in energy-technology commercialisation. New and existing climate-technology investors participated, including Founders Fund, 8090 Industries, Overmatch, IQT, Trust Ventures, Seven Stars, Liquid 2 Ventures and SV Angel. Several well-known industry figures, including Brian Janous, Sheldon Kimber and Peter Reinhardt, also joined the round. Shayle Kann, a partner at Energy Impact Partners, said that Voya’s approach offers the potential to overcome barriers that have long constrained distributed power generation. He noted that the company’s technology could help solve critical global challenges by providing clean electricity in places where grids cannot be built or extended quickly. The backing signals that investors see early promise in metal-fuel chemistry as a complement to batteries, hydrogen and other clean-power technologies. Voya now faces the task of scaling its prototypes, validating cost curves and demonstrating commercial use cases that can compete against conventional fuels.
