Vessev Raises $32.6M to Scale Electric Hydrofoil Production for US Expansion

Vessev Raises $32.6M to Scale Electric Hydrofoil Production for US Expansion

Vessev, an Auckland-based electric hydrofoiling vessel maker, has raised $32.6 million to ramp up production and expand into the United States, securing its first American customer in California operator FlyTahoe, which has ordered multiple VS-9 vessels for a proposed passenger network on Lake Tahoe. The company's vessels have logged more than 11,000 nautical miles across New Zealand and Australia, with one VS-9 already operating commercially with Fullers360 in Auckland, described as the world's first certified electric hydrofoiling vessel in a commercial ferry fleet.

Why Hydrofoil Lift Solves Electric Boats' Core Range Problem

Chief executive Eric Laakmann described the fundamental physics challenge facing electric marine vessels directly: water is heavy and creates substantial drag, making it inherently inefficient to push a conventional hull through water using battery power alone, since the energy required to overcome that hull drag limits how far an electric boat can travel before needing to recharge. Vessev's hydrofoil system addresses that problem by lifting the vessel's hull entirely above the water surface as it moves, eliminating hull drag and substantially reducing overall vessel drag.

That mechanical solution is why Vessev claims its vessels are approximately three times more efficient than conventional boats, a meaningful efficiency gain that directly extends the vessel's viable range and reduces its charging requirements, addressing the two constraints, limited range and slow charging, that have historically made battery-electric propulsion impractical for larger passenger vessels compared with smaller electric cars or even electric aircraft operating over shorter distances. The VS-9's foil system reportedly adjusts dynamically to changing water conditions up to 100 times per second, a response rate necessary to maintain stable lift and vessel control as wave conditions and water surface irregularities change continuously during operation.

Why the FlyTahoe Deployment Matters as a Proof Point

Lake Tahoe represents a demanding but favourable use case for testing hydrofoil vessel performance at commercial scale: it's a large enough body of water to require genuine range and speed capability from a passenger vessel network, while also being a market where environmental considerations around lake water quality and noise pollution from conventional motorboats have historically drawn scrutiny, making a quiet, zero-emission electric alternative particularly relevant to local environmental and regulatory concerns. Securing an order from an operator planning to establish a new passenger network specifically, rather than simply replacing an existing conventional vessel on an established route, gives Vessev a genuine commercial validation opportunity in one of the world's largest marine boating markets, as Laakmann described the US market.

The company's plan for its VS-9 Kermadec vessel to debut during New York Climate Week before travelling to Washington DC and Lake Tahoe for demonstrations extends the vessel's visibility beyond its immediate commercial customer, positioning the US tour as both a sales and marketing exercise ahead of broader American market entry.

Why Moving to Production Scale Is a Harder Problem Than the Technology Itself

Laakmann specifically distinguished between building individual demonstration or early customer vessels and establishing genuine manufacturing capacity, describing the latter as "10 times harder" than the underlying technology development itself, framing the challenge as building "the machine that builds the machine." That distinction reflects a common and often underappreciated hurdle facing hardware technology companies broadly: proving a novel technology works in a small number of hand-built units is a fundamentally different challenge from establishing a repeatable, cost-effective manufacturing process capable of producing that same technology reliably at commercial volume.

Vessev's stated plan to establish a production line in Auckland targeting 10 boats annually gives a concrete sense of the company's near-term manufacturing scale ambitions, a modest volume relative to conventional boat manufacturing but a meaningful step up from producing individual custom vessels for early adopter customers, and one that will require the company to validate its manufacturing processes and supply chain at a genuinely repeatable scale for the first time.

Why This Reflects a Broader Pattern in New Zealand's Technology Sector

Technology investment expert Mitali Purohit framed Vessev's trajectory as following an established pattern for New Zealand technology companies, developing domestically before pursuing much larger international markets to achieve meaningful scale, given the constraints of operating from a domestic market of just over five million people. She specifically identified climate tech, alongside space tech, mobility, fintech and health tech, as sectors where New Zealand is increasingly building recognised expertise attractive to international investors, positioning Vessev's raise and US expansion as part of a broader pattern of New Zealand-developed technology companies using early domestic and regional deployment, in this case commercial operation in Auckland and projects underway in Hobart, Perth and Sydney, to build the credibility needed to attract international customers and capital.

Whether Vessev's production line successfully scales to its targeted 10 vessels annually without the manufacturing challenges Laakmann described proving harder than anticipated, and whether the FlyTahoe deployment and broader US demonstration tour translate into additional American orders beyond this initial customer relationship, will determine how significantly this funding round advances the company's stated ambition to establish itself in the world's largest marine boating market.
