Vertical Aerospace to Lead £3.4M Charging Tech Programme for Electric Flight

Vertical Aerospace will lead development of next-generation high-power charging and thermal management technology for electric aircraft through the UK Government-backed ECLiPSE programme, representing a total investment of approximately £3.4 million, including up to £1.75 million in government funding. The project, developed in partnership with the University of Bath and engineering consultancy InnCat, was announced at the Farnborough International Airshow, where Vertical demonstrated the show's first eVTOL flights. The funding forms part of a wider £43 million UK Government package for next-generation aviation technology.

 

Why Charging Infrastructure Is the Emerging Bottleneck

 

As electric aviation moves toward commercial operations, charging infrastructure has emerged as one of the critical technologies determining whether high-frequency electric flight can become commercially and financially viable. That framing reflects a distinct problem from the aircraft technology itself: an electric aircraft that flies well but takes too long to recharge between flights cannot achieve the flight frequency commercial operators need to generate sufficient revenue per aircraft, since aircraft sitting idle on the ground charging represent lost operating capacity rather than the asset earning money in the air.

That economic logic is why charging speed and turnaround time matter as much to commercial viability as the aircraft's flight performance. A conventional aircraft can be refuelled in minutes, but batteries charge more slowly and generate significant heat during high-power charging, meaning the charging infrastructure itself, not just the aircraft, becomes a limiting factor on how many flights an operator can schedule per aircraft per day.

How Thermal Management Connects to Commercial Economics

 

The ECLiPSE programme is designed to develop charging and liquid-cooling technologies intended to reduce infrastructure costs, accelerate site integration, and enable faster aircraft turnaround. Liquid cooling addresses the heat generated during high-power charging directly, since batteries charging at higher power levels generate proportionally more heat, and managing that heat effectively is what allows charging speed to increase without damaging the battery or creating safety risks.

Improving thermal management alongside charging power is therefore not two separate technical challenges but a single interlinked one: faster charging is only commercially useful if the thermal management system can handle the additional heat load safely and without adding excessive size, weight or cost to the charging infrastructure. The programme's aim to reduce system size and installation complexity speaks to a further practical constraint, since charging infrastructure at airports and vertiports needs to fit within existing site constraints rather than requiring extensive new construction, which would itself undermine the cost-effectiveness the technology is meant to deliver.

 

A Programme With Applications Beyond Aviation

 

The technologies developed through ECLiPSE are also expected to have applications across the wider transport sector as electrification continues to expand, suggesting the high-power charging and thermal management advances being developed for aircraft could transfer to other transport modes facing similar fast-charging challenges, such as heavy-duty electric trucks or marine vessels, where battery size and charging speed present comparable trade-offs.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander framed the programme within a broader UK strategy to power up electric and hydrogen-powered aircraft while creating skilled jobs and spreading economic growth across the country, positioning the government's aviation decarbonisation investment as tied to industrial and regional economic policy goals alongside emissions reduction.

Part of a Much Larger UK Government Relationship

 

The ECLiPSE funding builds on longstanding UK government support for Vertical through the Aerospace Technology Institute and the Future Flight Challenge. More significantly, Vertical separately announced this week that it is in advanced discussions with the UK government on a broader package to anchor the first of its planned global full-production sites in the UK, including a further grant of up to £10 million, which would bring total direct UK government funding support to approximately £48 million.

That scale of cumulative government backing signals the UK's strategic interest in establishing itself as a manufacturing base for electric aviation, rather than simply funding discrete research projects in isolation. Chief executive Stuart Simpson framed ECLiPSE as making electric flight operationally and commercially viable while strengthening the UK's position in next-generation aerospace innovation. Whether the charging and thermal management technologies developed through ECLiPSE achieve the cost and turnaround improvements the programme is targeting, and whether the broader production site funding package progresses from advanced discussions into a completed agreement, will determine how significant a role UK government backing plays in Vertical's path toward commercial electric aviation operations.
