Verra has partnered with Brazil’s Amazonas state to strengthen its carbon markets, providing training and support for sustainable and high-impact carbon credit generation.
Verra, a global authority on carbon credit certification, has partnered with Brazil’s Amazonas state to support its carbon market initiatives, signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan. Through this collaboration, Verra will deliver specialized training to Amazonas officials, aiming to bolster their capacity in carbon markets and align with Verra’s standards for reducing deforestation and preserving rainforests.
“We are honored that the state of Amazonas selected Verra as a partner in strengthening regional carbon markets,” said Mandy Rambharos, CEO of Verra. “These markets hold the key to unlocking the climate finance needed to reduce emissions, save forests, retain biodiversity, and support local communities.”
Eduardo Taveira, Amazonas’ Secretary of State for the Environment, emphasized the significance of Verra’s role, stating, “Verra is the largest carbon credit certifier in the world. This partnership represents a significant advance in the sustainability trajectory of Amazonas, as it will provide all the necessary support for the State to be a generator of high integrity credits, following strict environmental criteria, with a guarantee of high environmental, social and low carbon economy impact that we seek.”
The initiative includes sustainability training for local officials, the facilitation of knowledge-sharing for effective carbon market management, and establishing robust regulatory frameworks. Through this partnership, Verra and Amazonas aim to unlock crucial funding for emission reduction, forest conservation, and support for local communities.
