Verdantas has acquired American Engineering & Environmental Consultants, a Reston, Virginia-based environmental engineering and technology consultancy, expanding its capabilities in data analytics and applied artificial intelligence for environmental and infrastructure work. The Tampa-based firm, which positions itself as a leader in digitally enabled technical consulting for the environment, water and energy transition markets, said the acquisition strengthens its ability to combine engineering, environmental services and digital tools across federal and commercial clients. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Founded more than 30 years ago, AEEC built its reputation on environmental remediation, regulatory compliance and long-term monitoring, paired with digital capabilities including data analytics, automation and applied AI. The firm's most notable asset is its patented Smart Water Data Analytics technology, which anchors its use of AI and machine learning for modernising infrastructure. AEEC has also been the subject of a Harvard Business School case study examining innovation and digital transformation in large-scale business processes across public and private sector markets.

The deal reflects a pattern increasingly common in environmental consulting, where firms are pairing traditional engineering expertise with data and AI capabilities to help clients manage complex regulatory and infrastructure demands more efficiently. Verdantas chief executive Jesse Kropelnicki said engineering and environmental services alone were only part of what the industry needed to offer, arguing that clients need better ways to use data, make decisions and manage projects, and that AEEC's practical application of automation and AI-enabled tools stood out for improving how projects are delivered over time.
For AEEC, joining a larger platform is framed as a route to scale rather than a change in direction. Chief executive Raj Patil said the combination let the firm keep building on its approach of integrating engineering, data and technology, now with the ability to bring those solutions to a broader set of clients nationwide. James Soldano, managing partner at Sterling Investment Partners, said AEEC's differentiated digital capabilities aligned well with Verdantas' strategy and strengthened the platform as it continues to grow.
