UK Takes Bold Step with Sustainable Aviation Fuel Mandate

The UK’s new Sustainable Aviation Fuel mandate requires 2% SAF in jet fuel by 2025, rising to 10% by 2030. It promises to cut emissions, create jobs, and position the UK as a green aviation leader.

The UK is ushering in a new era of greener skies with the launch of its Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) mandate, effective January 1, 2025. This initiative is set to revolutionize aviation by requiring 2% of all jet fuel used in flights departing from the UK to be sustainable, scaling up to 10% by 2030 and 22% by 2040.

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is derived from renewable materials such as waste products, used cooking oil, and plant-based sources. Compared to conventional jet fuel, SAF can reduce carbon emissions by up to 70%, making it a cornerstone in the UK's climate strategy to decarbonize the aviation sector, which remains one of the largest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions.

Tim Alderslade, CEO of Airlines UK, commended the initiative: “This mandate is a practical and effective way to reduce aviation emissions. The industry is ready to meet these ambitious goals, but scaling production and ensuring affordability will be key to its success.”

The UK government’s ambitious SAF goals extend beyond environmental impact. By 2030, the country aims to produce 1.2 million tonnes of SAF annually, fostering thousands of new jobs, driving investment, and positioning the UK as a global leader in clean energy innovation.

However, challenges remain. Achieving mandate compliance will require expanding SAF feedstocks, streamlining production costs, and ensuring fuel affordability for airlines and consumers. The government is also working to establish a domestic SAF production framework, which will ensure the aviation sector has reliable access to sustainable fuels as global demand rises.

This mandate is a decisive step towards the UK’s broader climate ambitions, combining environmental stewardship with economic opportunity. As discussions continue on long-term strategies, the UK is poised to set a benchmark for sustainable aviation.
