Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced a UK target to reduce emissions by 81% by 2035, underlining the importance of clean energy investments and international collaboration to address climate change.
At COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer committed to cutting the country’s greenhouse gas emissions by at least 81% by 2035, marking a significant step in the UK’s push to become a global clean energy leader. Starmer emphasized that climate action is essential not only for environmental sustainability but also for national and global security.
“Our mission to make Britain a clean energy superpower will fire up our industrial heartlands and break down barriers to growth in our hard-working towns and cities,” Starmer stated. He highlighted the importance of economic growth alongside climate action, pointing to initiatives like the Clean Industry Bonus, which incentivizes offshore wind development in key industrial regions.
A landmark project supporting this effort is ScottishPower's £1 billion contract with Siemens Gamesa for the East Anglia TWO offshore wind farm. This initiative is expected to power nearly one million homes and create over 1,300 local jobs in Humberside. Keith Anderson, CEO of ScottishPower, remarked, “Today is tangible proof of the importance of Britain’s Clean Power Mission – our East Anglia projects are delivering UK jobs, UK supply chain contracts, and UK green energy.”
The UK government also launched the CIF Capital Market Mechanism on the London Stock Exchange, which is expected to mobilize up to $75 billion in climate finance for developing nations over the next decade. Siemens Energy’s VP, Darren Davidson, praised the UK’s leadership in clean energy, stating, “The UK is the first leading industrial country to simultaneously phase out coal power and be a leader in offshore wind. If we’re to achieve our net zero targets, it’s mission critical this momentum is maintained.”
Starmer concluded his speech by stressing the need for international collaboration. “By acting decisively and early, the UK has an opportunity to lead the world in the industries of the future,” he said, urging other nations to adopt ambitious climate goals.
