thyssenkrupp Materials Services and Stegra Agree on Multi-Year Non-Prime Steel Supply to Support Green Steel Scale-Up

thyssenkrupp Materials Services and Stegra have entered into a significant multi-year agreement covering the supply of non-prime steel from Stegra’s Boden facility in northern Sweden, with first deliveries expected to begin in 2027. The total contracted volume is in the high six-digit tonne range, underlining the scale of the partnership.

The agreement positions thyssenkrupp Materials Processing Europe as a key off-taker during Stegra’s production ramp-up, while reinforcing the role of service centers in enabling the commercialization of hydrogen-based steelmaking at scale.

Supporting Industrial Ramp-Up in Green Steel

Under the agreement, thyssenkrupp Materials Processing Europe will acquire substantial volumes of non-prime steel produced at Stegra’s Boden site and distribute the material to customers across multiple European industries. Non-prime steel, while not meeting the most stringent quality thresholds required for certain high-end applications, remains structurally robust and suitable for a wide range of industrial uses.

For Stegra, securing a reliable partner for non-prime output is critical as it brings its large-scale hydrogen-based steel facility online. Steel mills inherently generate a share of non-prime material, and establishing predictable demand for these volumes is essential to operational stability and economic efficiency during early production phases.

Logistics and Market Access as Enablers

thyssenkrupp Materials Processing Europe brings extensive logistics capabilities, processing infrastructure, and an established customer base across sectors such as automotive supply, construction, and original equipment manufacturing. According to the company, this network allows it to absorb large steel volumes efficiently while tailoring processing to customer specifications.

From thyssenkrupp Materials Services’ perspective, the agreement also supports broader decarbonization efforts within the steel value chain by enabling the market entry of steel produced via green hydrogen routes.

Environmental Attributes and Claim Integrity

While Stegra’s Boden plant will operate using renewable electricity and green hydrogen, the non-prime steel supplied under this agreement will not be marketed as CO₂-reduced. Stegra plans to monetize the environmental value of its production separately through Environmental Attribute Certificates (EACs), which will be sold to customers in the prime steel market.

To avoid double counting, buyers of the physical non-prime steel are required to refrain from making environmental or green claims associated with the material. This separation between physical product and environmental attributes reflects emerging market structures in low-emission steel and mirrors approaches already seen in renewable electricity markets.

Building the Market for Green Steel at Scale

Agreements for non-prime steel play an important role in the development of hydrogen-based steelmaking, ensuring that all output streams are economically viable while environmental value is allocated transparently. Stegra announced its first EAC agreement in 2025, and partnerships such as this one are expected to contribute to the maturation of a credible, scalable market for low-emission steel in Europe.

As green steel projects move from concept to industrial reality, collaborations between producers and downstream service centers like thyssenkrupp Materials Services are becoming central to balancing operational efficiency, market demand, and integrity in sustainability claims.
