DHL’s Mission to Decarbonize Global Logistics

DHL’s Mission to Decarbonize Global Logistics

Every package has a footprint. DHL’s 39,000 EVs and green hubs show how logistics can deliver a net-zero future.

Every delivery carries a hidden footprint: the energy and emissions needed to move packages across oceans, warehouses, and city streets. As e-commerce surges, logistics has become one of the fastest-growing sources of greenhouse gas emissions.

DHL, the world’s largest logistics provider, is attempting to change what it means to deliver responsibly. With operations in over 220 countries and more than 600,000 employees, the company is weaving sustainability into the fabric of its global network. Its Strategy 2030 makes sustainability a fourth bottom line alongside profitability, reliability, and customer service. The goal is ambitious: transform logistics from a hidden source of emissions into a driver of climate solutions.

DHL’s Climate Commitments

DHL has committed to cut logistics-related emissions to under 29 million metric tons of CO₂e by 2030 (down from ~40 million in 2021), and to reach net zero across all operations by 2050. These science-based targets rest on three pillars:

  • Electrification of the fleet: Two-thirds of vans and trucks electric by 2030.
  • Sustainable fuels: 30% of aviation, ocean, and road freight powered by sustainable fuels by 2030.
  • Carbon-neutral facilities: All new warehouses and hubs built to net-zero standards.

This is not about keeping up with regulation but it’s about staying ahead of it.

“Sustainability is not an add-on for us. It is part of our business model. By investing in green technologies and solutions, we are not only reducing our own emissions, but also helping our customers to decarbonize their supply chains.”

— Tobias Meyer, CEO, DHL

Progress in 2024: From Paper to Practice

In 2024, DHL reduced 1.5 million metric tons of CO₂ through decarbonization. Highlights include:

  • 39,000 electric vehicles now on the road (over 40% of its pickup and delivery fleet).
  • 95% of electricity consumed worldwide sourced from renewables.
  • All new facilities designed to operate carbon-neutral.

Crucially, DHL is reducing emissions without driving up per-unit costs and proving that green logistics can be both sustainable and efficient.

Electrifying the Last Mile

The most visible change is on city streets. Out of 90,000 vans and trucks worldwide, more than 39,000 already run on electricity with two-thirds expected by 2030.

The benefits are immediate:

  • No tailpipe emissions → cleaner urban air.
  • Less noise → quieter mornings in residential neighborhoods.
  • Lower costs → EV fleets are cheaper to maintain and shielded from volatile fuel prices.

For businesses, this means smoother compliance with zero-emission zones. For communities, it means healthier, quieter streets.

💡In many European and Asian cities, electric vans are already reducing traffic noise and cutting air pollution bringing cleaner air for residents and quieter mornings for small businesses.

Sustainable Fuels for the “Hard Miles”

While EVs work for last-mile deliveries, long-haul freight requires different solutions. Here, DHL is turning to sustainable fuels.

  • By 2026, 10% of all express flights will use sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), cutting lifecycle emissions by up to 80% compared to kerosene.
  • Long-term contracts with suppliers are securing hundreds of millions of liters of SAF.
  • Ocean and road freight are also adopting biofuels at scale.

Through its GoGreen Plus program, customers can even purchase sustainable fuel use for their shipments  and credibly claim those reductions toward their own targets.

Warehouses: Tackling the “Invisible Footprint”

Beyond vehicles, logistics emissions hide in warehouses and fulfillment centers. With over 17 million m² of space under management, DHL’s approach is bold:

  • All new sites are carbon-neutral by design.
  • Existing hubs are being retrofitted with solar panels, efficient lighting, and renewable energy systems.
  • Many facilities already run entirely on green electricity.

This shrinks supply chain emissions before packages even reach a delivery van.

Business Impact: Value Beyond Compliance

For companies, partnering with a green logistics provider delivers clear advantages:

  • Lower costs: EV fleets and renewable-powered hubs reduce operating expenses.
  • Regulatory readiness: Smooth compliance with emerging carbon reporting and low-emission rules.
  • Resilience: A diversified energy mix (electricity, biofuels, solar) cushions supply chains from fuel price shocks.

Tools like DHL’s emissions dashboard also give companies granular shipment data which is simplifying reporting and boosting credibility with investors and customers.

Consumer Impact: Everyday Benefits

For consumers, the shift is already changing the delivery experience:

  • Greener options: Many retailers now offer “green delivery,” powered by DHL’s low-carbon services.
  • Transparency: Online platforms increasingly display estimated delivery emissions, letting shoppers align choices with values.
  • Community quality of life: Electric vans and cargo bikes reduce pollution and noise in city neighborhoods.

Surveys show consumers are willing to pay slightly more  or wait slightly longer  for deliveries with lower carbon footprints. Credibility here is key to building lasting trust.

Industry Context

Competitors and retailers are also setting net-zero targets, and governments are mandating sustainable fuels. What sets DHL apart is scale and integration:

  • Sustainability is embedded in corporate strategy, not a side project.
  • Billions have been committed to climate measures through 2030.
  • Progress is tied directly to management incentives.

This positions DHL as both a market leader and a standard-setter for sustainable logistics.

Ripple Effects Across the Economy

DHL’s scale creates ripple effects beyond its own network:

  • EV industry: Orders for tens of thousands of vans accelerate electric vehicle adoption.
  • Fuel suppliers: Multi-year contracts for sustainable fuels help producers scale up.
  • Real estate: Carbon-neutral warehouse standards push developers toward greener designs.

Every package delivered with lower emissions sends a signal to suppliers, regulators, and consumers: cleaner logistics is possible today.

Delivering the Future

The logistics industry doesn’t often make headlines, but it underpins modern life. Deliveries that once carried a heavy carbon burden are becoming lighter on the planet.

For businesses, it means cost savings, resilience, and compliance. For consumers, it means greener choices and healthier communities. For society, it’s a step toward aligning commerce with climate goals.

The next time a yellow van passes silently down your street, remember: what looks like an ordinary delivery is part of a global shift. Logistics is no longer just the engine behind trade but it’s becoming the green engine of a sustainable future.
