SKF Expands Low-Carbon Manufacturing With Six Additional Decarbonized Plants

SKF Expands Low-Carbon Manufacturing With Six Additional Decarbonized Plants

Swedish industrial group SKF has added six more production sites to its list of decarbonized factories, taking the total to nine facilities worldwide that now operate with near-zero operational emissions.

The milestone supports SKF’s broader climate roadmap, which targets full decarbonization of its own operations by 2030 and net-zero emissions across its value chain by 2050.

Operational Decarbonization at Scale

SKF’s factory decarbonization program focuses on eliminating emissions linked to energy use and on-site fuel consumption. To qualify as decarbonized, facilities must cut Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by at least 95% compared with 2019 levels, while maintaining a credible plan to manage any residual emissions. Continuous improvements in energy efficiency are also required.

According to the company, this approach is designed not only to reduce operational emissions but also to strengthen long-term energy resilience across its manufacturing footprint.

Global Footprint of New Decarbonized Sites

The six newly certified factories are located in Nilai, Malaysia; Puebla, Mexico; Haridwar and Pune, India; Massa, Italy; and Ladson, United States. These sites join SKF facilities in Steyr, Austria; Tudela, Spain; and Gothenburg, Sweden, which had previously achieved decarbonized status.

Collectively, the nine factories now account for nearly one-fifth of SKF’s baseline manufacturing emissions, marking a significant step toward the company’s 2030 operational climate target.

Energy Transition and Efficiency Measures

SKF said the latest group of factories achieved emissions reductions through a combination of renewable electricity sourcing and the removal of fossil fuel-based heating systems. Additional investments included heat pumps, upgraded cooling infrastructure, and advanced energy management technologies to improve efficiency and reduce overall demand.

Sofie Runius Cederberg, Head of Sustainability at SKF, noted that lowering the carbon footprint of production sites also has downstream benefits, enabling customers to develop more sustainable products and solutions.

Strengthening Resilience Through Climate Action

Susanne Larsson, Chief Sustainability Officer at SKF, emphasized that decarbonizing operations is not only a climate imperative but also a business strategy. By reducing energy demand and shifting to renewables, SKF is lowering exposure to volatile energy markets while improving operational performance.

As SKF continues to expand its low-carbon manufacturing model, the company positions itself among industrial players moving from pilot projects to scalable, global decarbonization across core operations.
