Sectarian clashes near Damascus leave 13 dead as tensions rise in Druze town

Sectarian violence in Jaramana, near Damascus, has left at least 13 dead after a voice recording allegedly insulting the Prophet Mohammad sparked Sunni-Druze tensions. The clash highlights deep-seated fears among minority groups and growing instability under Syria’s new Islamist-led government.

A violent outbreak of sectarian conflict in the Druze-majority town of Jaramana, southeast of the Syrian capital, has left at least 13 people dead, Syrian rescue workers and security sources confirmed on Tuesday. The fighting was reportedly triggered by the circulation of a voice recording in which a Druze man allegedly insulted the Prophet Mohammad, inciting anger among armed Sunni groups from nearby towns.

The overnight escalation is the latest flare-up in Syria’s fragile sectarian balance following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s government and the rise of an Islamist-led authority in Damascus. Minority communities, especially Alawites and Druze, have increasingly voiced concerns about their safety amid reports of retaliatory violence.

Deadly exchange rooted in religious sensitivities

According to security sources, the violence began when armed groups from Sunni towns such as Maliha advanced on Jaramana, leading to exchanges of gunfire with Druze residents. The clash involved small and medium arms and resulted in 13 fatalities, including two members of the General Security Service—Syria’s new security apparatus formed primarily from former rebel factions.

Interior ministry spokesman Mustafa al-Abdo claimed that no armed group had launched an attack. Instead, he characterized the event as a protest by aggrieved Sunni civilians that turned deadly when they were fired upon by local Druze fighters.

The Syrian Interior Ministry said it was investigating the origins of the inflammatory voice recording and appealed for calm, urging citizens “not to let emotions lead to violence or damage to public property.”

Calls for unity amid growing sectarian strain

In an effort to de-escalate tensions, Druze elders convened with government security officials. Sheikh Yousef Jarbou, a prominent Druze religious leader, publicly condemned the voice message, stating:

What was said by a few individuals against our Prophet represents only them and is rejected by us and all of society.

He urged both Sunni and Druze communities to reject incitement and preserve social harmony. Following negotiations, Druze representatives and Syrian authorities agreed to hold accountable those responsible for the attack and to work together on reducing sectarian mobilization, according to Syrian state media outlet SANA.

Fragile coexistence in a fractured state

Syria’s 14-year conflict has fragmented the nation into competing zones of control, with minority communities like the Druze increasingly relying on local militias for self-defense. While the new Islamist government in Damascus has called for all militias to integrate under state command, Druze fighters have resisted, citing the state's failure to ensure their protection from extremist factions.

Local Druze activists in Jaramana accused the authorities of negligence.

“The authorities are responsible for preserving security,” said Rabei Munzir, warning that future violence could spiral if security guarantees are not met.

Israel, which hosts a significant Druze population and controls the Golan Heights captured from Syria in 1967, has reiterated its willingness to intervene if the Druze face existential threats. This raises broader regional implications for what remains a deeply unsettled and sectarian post-conflict Syria.
