Portugal generates 71% of its electricity from renewable sources in 2024, driven by solar, wind, and hydropower, marking a significant shift towards clean energy and reducing natural gas reliance.
Portugal has made remarkable strides in its renewable energy efforts, generating a record 71% of its electricity from renewable sources in 2024, a notable increase from 61% in 2023, according to grid operator REN. This achievement showcases the country’s growing commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.
“This achievement highlights the effectiveness of Portugal’s renewable energy initiatives,” REN stated, emphasizing the importance of clean energy in the country’s long-term energy strategy.
Solar Power Surge and Dominance of Hydropower
In 2024, hydropower remained the largest contributor to Portugal’s renewable energy mix, accounting for 28% of total electricity consumption. Wind power followed closely at 27%, while solar power saw the most significant growth, increasing by 37%, and contributing 10% of the country’s electricity. Biomass made up 6% of the renewable energy production.
The surge in solar power highlights Portugal's expanding focus on clean energy solutions and its growing role in the global transition to sustainable electricity sources.
Decline in Natural Gas Consumption
In parallel with the rise of renewables, natural gas consumption in Portugal saw a sharp decline, dropping 17% to a 20-year low, despite overall electricity consumption reaching its highest levels since 2010. Natural gas now accounts for only 10% of power production, with Portugal relying heavily on imports from Nigeria and the U.S. for nearly all its natural gas needs.
Renewables Driving Sustainable Growth
Portugal's renewable energy success story is a testament to the country's ability to transition from fossil fuels to clean, sustainable energy. As REN highlighted, “Renewables are reshaping Portugal’s energy landscape, ensuring a sustainable and resilient future.”
Portugal’s progress in renewable energy serves as an inspirational model for other nations seeking to align economic growth with environmental sustainability and energy independence.
