Peru’s environmental certification authority has approved the environmental impact study for the Trapiche copper project, a $3.4 billion development planned by mining company Buenaventura in the Apurímac region. The approval marks a major step forward for one of the country’s largest upcoming copper investments, although several additional regulatory permits are still required before construction can begin.
The decision was issued by the National Environmental Certification Service for Sustainable Investments (SENACE), which oversees environmental reviews for major infrastructure and mining projects. The approval confirms that the project’s environmental management framework meets regulatory standards required for further development planning.
Regulatory Approval and Next Steps
The environmental impact study approval represents an early but important stage in Peru’s mining authorization process. While the certification validates the project’s environmental planning and mitigation measures, it does not permit the start of construction or extraction activities.
Buenaventura must still obtain additional authorizations from government agencies, including a construction permit and other sector-specific approvals required under Peru’s mining regulatory framework.
Environmental impact studies in Peru assess potential effects on water resources, biodiversity, land use and local communities. The Trapiche evaluation includes environmental mitigation plans, operational monitoring systems and community engagement requirements intended to reduce ecological and social risks associated with large-scale mining operations.

Strategic Expansion into Copper
For Buenaventura, the Trapiche project represents a strategic shift toward expanding copper production. The company has historically focused on gold and silver mining, but has increasingly positioned copper as a key growth area.
Copper is considered a critical mineral for the global energy transition because of its extensive use in electricity networks, renewable energy infrastructure and electric vehicles. Demand for the metal is expected to increase significantly over the coming decades as electrification accelerates across industries.
The Trapiche project is not expected to begin production until after 2030, reflecting the long development timelines typical of large-scale mining investments.
Peru’s Role in Global Copper Supply
Peru remains one of the most important countries in the global copper market. The country ranks as the world’s third-largest copper producer after Chile and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and mining is a central pillar of the national economy.
Large mining developments in Peru have faced increasing environmental scrutiny in recent years as regulators seek to balance economic growth with environmental protection and community concerns in resource-rich regions.
Approvals such as the Trapiche environmental study are therefore closely watched by investors and policymakers as indicators of how the country manages the development of strategic minerals.

Environmental Governance and Energy Transition Metals
The approval also highlights the growing intersection between mining investment and environmental governance. Environmental certification processes have become critical for securing project financing and maintaining regulatory credibility, particularly for projects linked to global decarbonization supply chains.
As demand for copper rises due to electrification and renewable energy deployment, resource-rich countries face increasing pressure to expand production while ensuring strong environmental oversight.
The Trapiche project illustrates this balance. If developed as planned, it could strengthen Peru’s position in global copper markets while testing how large mining investments align with the sustainability expectations shaping the energy transition.
