OPAL Fuels to Build RNG Station Displacing 400,000 Gallons of Diesel Yearly

OPAL Fuels will build and operate a new fuelling station in Dinuba, California, supplying compressed and renewable natural gas to the city's municipal refuse collection fleet under a long-term agreement with the city and its service partners. The station has capacity to dispense 4 million gasoline gallon equivalents of low-carbon fuel over the next decade and is projected to displace approximately 400,000 gallons of diesel annually once operational.

 

The station will initially supply CNG to the refuse collection fleet of Peña's Disposal Service, Dinuba's contracted refuse provider, alongside other CNG vehicles serving the city and the surrounding agricultural region. Under the agreement, the station will also dispense renewable natural gas, a fuel derived from organic waste sources including landfills, dairy operations and wastewater treatment plants, to power the refuse trucks serving the community. RNG is generally considered carbon-negative to low-carbon depending on the specific feedstock and production pathway, since it captures methane that would otherwise be released from decomposing organic waste and converts it into usable transportation fuel rather than allowing it to escape into the atmosphere.

The station is expected to be open to the public, extending access to renewable fuel beyond the municipal refuse fleet to other local fleet operators in the region, one of California's most productive agricultural areas, where diesel-powered vehicles have traditionally served both waste collection and broader agricultural transport needs.

 

Adam Comora, co-chief executive officer of OPAL Fuels, said the company was proud to invest in Dinuba's fuelling infrastructure to help Peña's Disposal Service deliver essential services more sustainably, framing the arrangement as beneficial both economically and environmentally given that RNG has consistently priced below diesel while reducing emissions.
