Amphitrite’s NVIDIA-powered AI models use satellite data to optimize shipping routes, cut fuel use by 10%, and track ocean pollution, transforming maritime operations and sustainability efforts globally.
Amphitrite, a France-based weather modeling startup, is using cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) and satellite data to transform maritime shipping while addressing environmental challenges like ocean pollution. The company's AI models, powered by NVIDIA technology, predict ocean conditions such as currents, weather patterns, and waves, enabling ships to optimize routes, reduce fuel consumption, and lower carbon emissions.
Alexandre Stegner, cofounder and CEO of Amphitrite, highlighted the impact of their innovation:
“We’re at a turning point on the modernization of oceanic atmospheric forecasting. There’s a wide portfolio of applications for these oceanographic AI models, but our primary goal is to foster the energy transition and address environmental issues.”
The AI models draw on data from NASA’s Sentinel-3 satellite and the SWOT mission, providing a level of accuracy that traditional methods cannot match. By analyzing ocean surface currents, waves, and wind patterns, Amphitrite’s technology has helped shipping companies cut carbon emissions by up to 10% in specific regions, such as the Mediterranean Sea.
Powered by NVIDIA’s H100 GPUs and Earth-2 simulation platforms, Amphitrite's systems process immense amounts of satellite data, enhancing predictions and boosting operational efficiency.
Evangelos Moschos, cofounder and CTO of Amphitrite, noted:
"With NVIDIA accelerated computing, we achieve unparalleled performance when analyzing the entire ocean’s data. This fusion of AI and satellite imagery improves global ocean current analyses by up to 2x."
Amphitrite's technology extends beyond shipping. The startup has partnered with a non-governmental organization to track plastic movements in the Pacific Ocean, facilitating targeted litter-collection operations. This dual-purpose approach supports both sustainable shipping and ocean clean-up efforts.
Named after the Greek goddess of the sea, Amphitrite reflects a commitment to innovation and environmental stewardship. The diverse AI team, including women in key technical roles, exemplifies the company’s dedication to fostering both technological and societal progress.
As maritime industries face increasing pressure to adopt greener practices, Amphitrite’s AI-driven solutions represent a critical step forward in sustainable oceanic operations.
