Northvolt Declares Bankruptcy Amid EV Market Slowdown

Northvolt, once Europe’s EV battery leader, files for bankruptcy, citing EV demand decline, capital costs, and supply chain disruptions. Major automakers are now rethinking electrification plans.

March 6, 2025 – Swedish battery manufacturer Northvolt has filed for bankruptcy, marking the downfall of a company once poised to lead Europe’s EV battery revolution. Despite raising $14 billion in funding—including a $5 billion green loan last year—Northvolt struggled with declining EV demand, rising costs, and supply chain disruptions.

Strategic Challenges & Industry Shift

Northvolt’s collapse follows a sharp reduction in European EV demand, prompting automakers to scale back electrification plans. A revised S&P Global forecast slashed the EU’s 2025 battery-electric vehicle (BEV) market share prediction from 27% to 21%, impacting investment in battery production.

  • Volkswagen (21%) and Goldman Sachs (19%), key investors in Northvolt, devalued their stakes last year.
  • Volvo, which had a joint gigafactory venture with Northvolt, took full control of the partnership in early 2025.
  • BMW canceled a €2 billion battery contract in July, citing delays, opting instead for Samsung SDI.

Northvolt’s Struggles

Beyond EV market volatility, Northvolt faced:

  • Soaring capital costs and geopolitical instability.
  • Production challenges—reports indicated the company struggled to meet delivery timelines.
  • Leadership shifts—Chairman Jim Hagemann Snabe stepped down last year due to health issues.

Interim Chairman Tom Johnstone called the bankruptcy “an incredibly difficult day”, emphasizing the need for long-term commitment to build a homegrown European battery industry.

The Bigger Picture

Northvolt’s failure signals growing uncertainty in the European EV and battery sector. With governments scaling back incentives, charging infrastructure lagging, and tariffs disrupting supply chains, automakers are revising electrification strategies. The future of Europe’s battery independence remains uncertain.
