NORDEN Delivers First Verified Maritime Emissions Reductions Through Book & Claim to Microsoft

NORDEN has delivered the first verified maritime emissions reductions through the RSB Book & Claim registry, in a pilot completed with Microsoft and the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials. The transaction marks the first time a maritime carrier has issued and delivered verified emissions reductions through this specific registry, extending a mechanism previously established in aviation into maritime transport for the first time.

Why Book and Claim Solves a Specific Physical Logistics Problem in Shipping

Sustainable marine fuel is not physically available at every port or on every individual voyage a shipping customer might use, creating a practical barrier for companies wanting to reduce their shipping-related emissions but unable to guarantee their specific cargo travels on a vessel actually burning sustainable fuel. Book & Claim addresses that barrier by decoupling the environmental benefit of sustainable fuel from the specific physical voyage or vessel that consumes it, allowing a company to purchase verified emissions reductions linked to sustainable fuel used anywhere within the industry, regardless of where that fuel is actually consumed or where the purchasing company's own goods happen to be transported.

That structure mirrors the mechanism explained in Sino Jet's SAF compliance service for aviation covered earlier in this batch, and reflects the same underlying logic behind renewable energy certificates in the electricity sector: since a specific unit of clean fuel or clean electricity typically cannot be physically traced to a specific end user once it enters a shared supply chain, tracking and trading the environmental attribute separately from the physical commodity allows buyers to fund and claim credit for genuine emissions reductions occurring somewhere within the broader system, even without direct physical delivery to their own specific transaction.

Why Extending the Aviation Framework Carries Specific Credibility Advantages

Rather than building an entirely new verification and accounting framework from scratch for maritime transport, NORDEN, Microsoft and RSB extended the RSB Book & Claim registry's existing framework, already established and tested in aviation, to cover maritime carriers for the first time. RSB Director Max Eichelbaum specifically framed this extension as "a direct response" to the organisation's priority of developing "market-enabling tools for decarbonisation across hard-to-abate sectors."

Building on an already-operational framework rather than creating a separate maritime-specific system from scratch likely gave this pilot a faster path to credible implementation, since the underlying verification methodology, chain-of-custody tracking, and registry infrastructure had already been refined and tested through real-world aviation use before being adapted for maritime application, reducing the risk of the kind of design flaws or credibility gaps a brand-new, untested accounting system might otherwise carry in its first application.

Why Microsoft's First-Mover Position Reflects a Broader Infrastructure-Building Pattern

Microsoft is described as the first company globally to use Book & Claim for shipping emissions through the RSB registry. That first-mover position extends a pattern already visible elsewhere in Microsoft's climate strategy covered in this batch, including its published pre-issuance diligence reports on carbon removal projects developed with BeZero Carbon, and its partnership with Aker Solutions to help mature carbon capture and removal projects toward commercial viability.

Across these separate initiatives, Microsoft consistently positions itself not merely as a buyer of already-established climate solutions, but as an early participant helping build and validate new market mechanisms and infrastructure before they become widely adopted, a strategy Microsoft's Bella Horstmann framed specifically around demonstrating "that companies don't need to wait to start reducing their shipping emissions in a verified and meaningful way," positioning this pilot as much about proving the mechanism's viability for the broader market as about Microsoft's own direct emissions accounting.

What NORDEN's New Certification Reveals About the Barrier to Broader Industry Adoption

To complete this transaction, NORDEN became the first maritime operator to obtain RSB Book & Claim trader certification, described as a prerequisite for any maritime carrier wishing to issue and sell verified emissions reductions through the registry. That certification requirement indicates the mechanism's expansion to additional shipping carriers beyond NORDEN will require each individual carrier to separately pursue and obtain this same certification before they can participate, rather than the framework being automatically available to any maritime operator immediately following this initial pilot's completion.

NORDEN Chief Operating Officer Anne Jensen specifically connected this mechanism to a broader supply chain visibility problem, noting that "some of the most difficult emissions to address are those embedded deep within global supply chains, where they often have little visibility or direct influence over how goods are transported," framing Book & Claim as bridging that gap for companies dependent on maritime transport but lacking direct operational control over the specific vessels and fuels used to move their goods.

What Comes Next for Broader Industry Adoption

Following this pilot, RSB plans to update its Procedure for Book and Claim Chain of Custody specifically to enable broader adoption of the mechanism across the maritime industry, while NORDEN states it will continue working with customers and partners with the stated goal of making verified emissions reductions a standard offering in ocean transport. Whether other maritime carriers pursue the same trader certification NORDEN obtained, and whether additional corporate buyers beyond Microsoft begin using the maritime Book & Claim mechanism to address their own shipping-related supply chain emissions, will determine how quickly this pilot's framework scales from a single demonstrated transaction into the standard industry practice both NORDEN and RSB describe as their ultimate goal.
