Mitsui & Co. Signs 18 MW Virtual PPA With NIKE Japan for Solar Energy Supply

Mitsui & Co. Signs 18 MW Virtual PPA With NIKE Japan for Solar Energy Supply

Long-Term VPPA Covers 16 Solar Power Plants

Mitsui & Co., Ltd. has signed a long-term virtual power purchase agreement with NIKE Japan Group, LLC to supply renewable energy and associated environmental value from domestic solar power plants in Japan. The agreement was concluded together with Mitsui’s wholly owned subsidiary, Mitsui & Co. Project Solutions, Ltd.

Under the arrangement, Mitsui and MPS will provide Non-FIT Non-Fossil Certificates generated from 16 solar power plants located within the TEPCO Power Grid service area. The total capacity covered by the VPPA amounts to 18 megawatts, comprising 3 megawatts from new solar projects and 15 megawatts from recently established facilities.

These certificates represent the environmental value of electricity produced from renewable sources and allow corporate buyers to account for clean energy consumption without directly receiving physical power.

Supporting 100% Renewable Electricity for Nike Japan

Through the agreement, NIKE Japan will be able to match 100 percent of the electricity used at its owned and operated facilities in Japan with renewable energy. The coverage extends across distribution centers, retail stores and office operations nationwide.

By securing environmental attributes from domestic solar plants, NIKE Japan advances its efforts to reduce its carbon footprint and strengthen its sustainability strategy.

A virtual power purchase agreement enables companies to purchase the environmental value of renewable electricity while the physical electricity is supplied to the grid. In this case, the Non-FIT Non-Fossil Certificates are issued for renewable generation not covered under Japan’s Feed-in Tariff scheme, providing an additional pathway for clean energy procurement and market expansion.

Expanding Corporate Renewable Solutions

The inclusion of both new and recently built solar plants supports incremental renewable capacity while reinforcing the commercial case for clean energy investments in Japan.

Mitsui indicated that it will continue promoting renewable energy deployment by combining its expertise in electricity sales and supply-demand management with MPS’s experience in power generation development and operational oversight. Through similar agreements, the company aims to support corporate customers in meeting climate commitments and accelerating their transition toward lower-carbon operations.
