Microsoft and SBM Offshore have announced a strategic partnership to develop AI-driven floating power solutions, accelerating industrial electrification with a focus on carbon-free energy.


AI and Floating Power: A Sustainable Energy Breakthrough


SBM Offshore has entered a global collaboration agreement with Microsoft to leverage AI and digital technologies for scalable, carbon-free floating power solutions. The initiative is aimed at providing reliable, affordable, and sustainable electricity in regions requiring offshore energy infrastructure.


SBM Offshore brings its expertise in floating energy systems, while Microsoft contributes AI, cloud computing, and digital sustainability capabilities.


Olivier Icyk, Chief Business Officer at SBM Offshore, emphasized:


“This partnership will allow us to create scalable, investment-ready clean energy solutions. By integrating SBM Offshore’s floating energy infrastructure expertise with Microsoft’s AI capabilities, we will accelerate the energy transition and build a more sustainable global energy ecosystem.”

  • AI-Powered Carbon Monitoring & Optimization – Real-time carbon measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV).
  • Predictive Maintenance – Utilizing Microsoft Copilot and Azure AI Foundry to enhance operational efficiency.
  • Lifecycle Asset Management – AI-driven insights for optimizing floating power platforms.

First Deployment: UK and Norwegian Continental Shelves


The first phase of the collaboration will focus on deploying floating gas power solutions integrated with Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technology in the UK and Norwegian Continental Shelves, in partnership with Norway’s Ocean-Power AS.


The pilot aims to establish a scalable model for global expansion, with planned rollouts across Europe, Asia-Pacific, and the Americas to support energy security and decarbonization goals.
