Mercedes F1 Team Achieves Major Carbon Footprint Reductions with Biofuels

Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team powered its 2024 European season using HVO100 biofuel, achieving 98% coverage and reducing carbon emissions by over 500 tonnes, setting a sustainability benchmark.

The Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team has made significant strides in sustainability by powering its marketing trucks and generators with HVO100 biofuel during the 2024 European season. This initiative, developed in collaboration with logistics partners, aimed to enhance the use of biofuels across the nine races held in Europe.

Despite the challenges posed by the complex supply chain, the team successfully achieved an impressive 98% biofuel coverage for its race and marketing operations. This effort resulted in a reduction of over 500 tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions from their carbon footprint.

The success of this biofuel initiative is attributed to the dedication of team members across various departments. Karl, Head of Race Team Logistics, highlighted the collective effort involved in moving equipment across Europe: “It's rewarding to offset our impact and contribute to a greener future.”

Jordan, Fuel Operations and Site Support Manager, echoed this sentiment, noting the collaborative spirit required for such a successful transition to biofuels. Ed, Senior Legal Counsel, added that the cross-functional cooperation was essential: “Our partners were immediately supportive once we outlined our goals.”

HVO100 biofuel is derived from vegetable oil feedstocks and is recognized by the International Energy Agency as an effective solution for reducing fuel-related emissions. The team initially trialed HVO100 in 2022, achieving an impressive 89% reduction in freight emissions during that period.

As the team continues to advance its sustainability goals, these achievements set a promising precedent for eco-friendly practices in motorsport.
