Massachusetts Awards $2m to Boost Early-Stage Climatetech Startups

The Massachusetts Clean Energy Center has awarded more than $2 million to ten organisations that support early-stage climatetech startups, part of the Healey-Driscoll administration's push to strengthen the state's clean-technology pipeline. The funding, distributed through the agency's Innovation Ecosystem Program, goes to accelerators, incubators, universities and other business-development groups across six communities. It is aimed at expanding hands-on programming that moves climatetech companies from idea to market.

The programme targets a specific gap in the startup lifecycle: the stretch between an early technology and a commercially viable company, where many promising ideas stall. The funded organisations, known as Entrepreneur Support Organizations, provide the technical assistance, mentorship and networks that help founders pressure-test concepts, refine technologies, validate market fit and clear early commercialisation hurdles more quickly.

The awards spread across the state and vary in size. The largest packages combine operational funding with dedicated fellowship money, with Cambridge-based Activate Global receiving $120,000 plus $600,000 in fellowship funding and Somerville's Greentown Labs receiving $120,000 plus $300,000 in fellowship funding. Other recipients include FORGE, MassChallenge, MassRobotics, The Engine, Leading Cities, the Berkshire Innovation Center, InnoVenture Labs and UMass Lowell, with awards ranging from $60,000 to $120,000.

Beyond covering operational costs, the fellowship component is designed to translate research into climatetech businesses, products and jobs across the energy, transportation and buildings sectors, the three areas central to the state's decarbonisation strategy. State officials framed the investment as reinforcing an innovation pipeline in which research, entrepreneurship and industry support one another.

Ben Downing, chief executive of the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center, said the awards would help founders move from concept to company faster and with stronger support behind them, and described the funding as an investment in the organisations' ability to scale their economic impact across the state.
