Levi’s Launches First Climate Transition Plan, Targets Net-Zero Emissions by 2050

Levi Strauss & Co. unveils a climate transition plan aiming for net-zero emissions by 2050. The denim giant commits to major cuts in supply chain emissions, renewable energy, and water reduction.

Levi Strauss & Co., the iconic denim manufacturer, has released its inaugural climate transition plan, setting ambitious sustainability goals, including achieving net-zero emissions across its global supply chain by 2050. As part of the plan, Levi’s pledges to reduce scope 1 and scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 90% by 2025 and to cut scope 3 emissions by 42% by 2030, using a 2022 baseline.

In a move towards environmental accountability, Levi’s aligns its climate transition plan with the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosure’s guidelines, while incorporating insights from organizations such as Ceres, the World Resources Institute, and the Carbon Disclosure Project. Levi’s further aims to run its company-operated facilities entirely on renewable electricity by 2025 and to cut freshwater use in water-stressed regions by 50% by next year, relative to 2018.

“By setting these goals, Levi’s is demonstrating a commitment to both climate resilience and sustainable business growth,” said Jeffrey Hogue, Levi’s Chief Sustainability Officer. Hogue emphasized the importance of working collaboratively across the company’s value chain to meet these ambitious targets and improve operational resilience.

This climate plan arrives following the Science Based Targets initiative’s recent endorsement of Levi’s 2050 net-zero goal. Levi’s has also updated its baseline year for scope 3 emissions reductions to 2022, reflecting its evolving approach to climate action. The company intends to review and refine its strategy every three years to stay aligned with global standards and adapt to emerging climate challenges.
