LEGO Group is phasing out single-use plastics with recyclable paper-based bags in its sets. Part of its 2032 and 2050 sustainability goals, the initiative enhances both environmental impact and user experience.
The LEGO Group is rolling out paper-based bags in its packaging as part of its sustainability initiative to eliminate single-use plastics. This effort aligns with LEGO's broader goals to achieve net-zero emissions across its value chain by 2050 and to transition its products and packaging to sustainable materials by 2032.
Testing and Implementation
To ensure durability, LEGO tested 180 different paper varieties to find one that could endure manufacturing processes and resist tearing during transit. The paper-based bags, now produced in LEGO factories worldwide, are recyclable in the EU, U.S., and Canada. The company also adapted its factories to accommodate the new materials, including modifications to packaging lines and humidity controls.
Global Rollout
The paper bags have already been introduced in Europe and Asia and are set to roll out in the Americas. LEGO highlighted an unexpected benefit of the new packaging: children enjoy the surprise element of unwrapping paper bags compared to clear plastic ones. Larger paper bags are also designed to stand upright, making them convenient for organizing bricks during building.
A Commitment to Sustainability
The move is part of LEGO’s broader sustainability strategy, which includes significant investments in researching sustainable materials to reduce the carbon footprint of its products and packaging. The company is targeting a 37% reduction in emissions by 2032 (from a 2019 baseline) and aims to minimize waste through renewable or recycled resources.
