Kimberly-Clark’s Kleenex manufacturing site in Germany is set to achieve 100% renewable energy by 2029, cutting 50,000 tons of carbon emissions per year. The move supports the company’s 50% emissions reduction goal by 2030 and will be backed by electrification, renewable PPAs, and government incentives.
Kimberly-Clark, the multinational consumer goods company, has announced that its manufacturing facility in Koblenz, Germany, will transition to 100% renewable energy by 2029. This milestone marks the company’s first tissue production site worldwide to achieve complete renewable energy reliance.
The move is a significant step in Kimberly-Clark’s broader climate strategy, which aims to reduce Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 50% by 2030. The transition will contribute to these targets by cutting 50,000 tons of carbon emissions annually at the Kleenex factory.
Key Sustainability Milestone for Kimberly-Clark
The Koblenz plant manufactures products under well-known brands, including:
- Kleenex
- Scottex
- Scott
- WypAll
- Page & Hakle
To achieve 100% renewable energy, the company will:
🔹 Electrify its heating systems, replacing natural gas boilers and hood heaters with electric alternatives.
🔹 Procure renewable electricity through a portfolio of European power purchase agreements (PPAs).
🔹 Utilize Germany’s Carbon Contract for Difference (CCfD) Award, a government-backed financial mechanism supporting industries in transitioning away from fossil fuels.
Lisa Morden, Chief Sustainability Officer at Kimberly-Clark, emphasized the significance of the project:
“Announcing our first Kimberly-Clark tissue manufacturing site globally with a pathway to 100% renewable energy is an incredible milestone that demonstrates how we continue to progress on our decarbonization journey, through innovative cross-sector collaboration. We are proud to execute this decarbonization project that will unlock new technologies for Kimberly-Clark, enabling us to tackle the challenge of reducing direct greenhouse emissions, which represent 60% of our total emissions.”
