Just Climate Invests $25M in GreenLight Biosciences to Advance Sustainable Agriculture

Just Climate has invested $25M in GreenLight Biosciences to expand RNA-based sustainable agricultural solutions. The funding supports product growth, pollinator protection, and global expansion.

In a significant boost for sustainable agriculture, GreenLight Biosciences has secured a $25 million investment from Just Climate, a climate solutions-focused investment firm chaired by former U.S. Vice President Al Gore’s Generation Investment Management. The funding, part of GreenLight’s Series C round, will support the company’s mission to enhance agricultural productivity while reducing environmental impact and preserving biodiversity.

A Game-Changer for Sustainable Farming

Founded in 2008, GreenLight Biosciences is a Medford, Massachusetts-based biotechnology firm that develops RNA-based solutions for farmers and beekeepers. Unlike conventional chemical pesticides, GreenLight’s biodegradable RNA-based products target pests and plant diseases without harming beneficial insects or the environment.

The company recently launched Calantha, the first-ever registered RNA-based crop protection spray, designed to help potato growers combat destructive pests safely and sustainably. GreenLight’s innovations address growing concerns over chemical resistance, environmental harm, and food security challenges.

With this new funding, the company will focus on expanding commercialization and advancing its next-generation bio-based solutions, including:

  • Norroa – A breakthrough treatment to protect bee colonies from deadly varroa mites, a major threat to global pollinator populations.
  • Fortivance – A product that improves existing agricultural treatments, increasing their effectiveness while minimizing their ecological footprint.
  • Global Market Expansion – Strategic entry into Brazil and other Latin American markets, where sustainable agricultural solutions are in high demand.

Investment in Climate and Biodiversity Solutions

GreenLight Bio’s CEO, Dr. Andrey Zarur, emphasized the significance of this investment:

“This strategic investment from Just Climate and others represents a powerful endorsement of our RNA platform’s potential to revolutionize agriculture while addressing environmental challenges including pollinator health. With this funding, we are well-positioned to scale our commercial operations, advance our product pipeline, and further our mission of building a safer, more equitable food system using nature.”

Why Just Climate Invested in GreenLight

Founded in 2021, Just Climate invests in high-impact businesses that support climate and nature-based solutions. The firm focuses on hard-to-abate sectors, ensuring investments deliver both environmental benefits and strong commercial returns.

Eduardo Mufarej, Co-Chief Investment Officer at Just Climate, explained the firm’s decision to back GreenLight:

“GreenLight Biosciences exemplifies the type of innovative enterprise that can deliver transformative environmental impact while building sustainable commercial success. Their platform addresses some of the most pressing challenges facing global agriculture and biodiversity conservation. We are pleased to support GreenLight Bio’s mission and solutions that help protect crops, pollinators, and our planet’s ecosystems.”

The Future of Sustainable Agriculture

This investment signals growing momentum for biological alternatives to traditional pesticides, especially as regulatory scrutiny and consumer demand push for safer, more environmentally responsible farming practices.

As climate change, biodiversity loss, and food security challenges intensify, GreenLight’s RNA-based solutions could play a pivotal role in creating a more sustainable global food system. With strong financial backing and expanding international reach, GreenLight is well-positioned to redefine modern agriculture—ensuring higher yields, healthier ecosystems, and a safer planet.
