Isometric Issues 97,000+ Rice Methane Certificates to Mitti Labs

Isometric has issued its first superpollutant reduction certificates, with more than 97,000 certificates generated through Mitti Labs' rice farming projects in southern India. Announced on 5 November 2026, the issuance represents approximately 97,807 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions reductions. The certificates were independently verified under Isometric's Rice Methane Reduction Protocol, marking a milestone in scaling verified methane-reduction projects in the agricultural sector.

Mitti Labs works with more than 100,000 farmers across Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Odisha to introduce Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD), a farming practice that replaces continuous rice field flooding with controlled drainage and reflooding. The technique reduces methane formation in waterlogged soils and can cut methane emissions by up to 50% while reducing water consumption by up to 40%, without compromising crop yields. Rice cultivation produces approximately one billion tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions annually, making it a significant source of agricultural methane.

The issuance comes amid growing corporate demand for verified methane reduction credits. Earlier in 2026, Amazon, Google, JPMorganChase and Salesforce were among companies that collectively committed $100 million towards superpollutant reduction projects. Google and Salesforce have also signed agreements with Mitti Labs covering a combined 1.5 million tonnes of emissions reductions. These agreements reflect increasing interest in financing agricultural methane mitigation alongside other carbon market activities.

Xavi Laguarta, Co-founder of Mitti Labs, said, "Corporate buyers are increasingly diversifying their offset portfolios to include mitigation pathways like rice methane reduction." He added that Isometric's scientific approach would support demand for verified certificates and help the company expand its projects. Revenue from certificate sales will help finance agricultural activities and create employment opportunities, with participating farmers expected to receive a share of proceeds beginning in early 2027.

Isometric verified the certificates under its Rice Methane Reduction Protocol, developed with input from its independent scientific network. Each certificate represents one tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions reduced, with supporting project information publicly accessible through the Isometric Registry. The company's AI-powered Certify platform automates data checks and emissions calculations, accelerating verification and issuance. The development demonstrates how digital monitoring and standardised verification can support the expansion of agricultural methane reduction projects.
