ISO launches ESG Implementation Principles at COP29, aiding global businesses in embedding sustainability into operations. Developed with global experts, the guidelines align with UN SDGs and drive transparency.
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) unveiled its new ESG Implementation Principles at COP29. Developed with input from 1,900 experts across 128 countries, these guidelines aim to streamline Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices globally. They are designed to help organizations of all sizes simplify compliance, enhance transparency, and effectively integrate ESG into their operations.
Global ESG regulations have surged by 155% over the past decade, making it challenging for businesses to achieve consistent reporting. The ISO principles address these complexities by providing a standardized framework for embedding ESG into organizational culture, covering environmental, social, and governance aspects.
The principles ensure compatibility with disclosure frameworks, enabling better reporting and decision-making. Sergio Mujica, Secretary-General of ISO, emphasized, “These guidelines will foster a lasting culture of ESG, benefiting organizations, governments, and the environment.”
The British Standards Institution (BSI), the Standards Council of Canada (SCC), and the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards (ABNT) played key roles in developing these guidelines. Susan Taylor Martin, Chief Executive of BSI, highlighted the potential to drive change in areas such as emissions reduction and biodiversity protection.
Mario William Esper, President of ABNT, stated that the principles offer a solid foundation for meeting global requirements while addressing socio-environmental impacts. Chantal Guay, CEO of SCC, added that the guidance simplifies ESG integration, fostering trust and improving performance.
Aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the ESG Implementation Principles reinforce ISO’s commitment to climate action, making them a critical tool for organizations aiming to lead in sustainability efforts.
