Since May 2025, more than 1,000 people seeking aid have tragically lost their lives in Gaza, according to the U.S.-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF). Most fatalities are attributed to Israeli forces operating near GHF aid sites. On a recent Monday, at least 40 Palestinians were killed by gunfire and airstrikes, including ten individuals attempting to access aid. Humanitarian agencies warn that famine may be emerging, as starvation claimed the lives of five more people in the enclave. The deaths occurred in two separate incidents close to GHF aid locations in central and southern Gaza.
Desperation and Conflict in Sudan’s Darfur Region
In Sudan, the hunger crisis is exacerbated by ongoing conflict. Hundreds of thousands of people remain besieged in the western Darfur region, where the Sudanese army maintains its last stronghold amid relentless artillery and drone attacks from paramilitary forces. Those fleeing face the dual threats of cholera outbreaks and violent assaults. Al-Fashir, the capital of North Darfur, stands as the main frontline between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in a civil war entering its third year.

Steps Toward Addressing Gaza’s Hunger Crisis
Recently, Israel announced plans to allow a gradual, controlled flow of goods into Gaza through local merchants. The Israeli military’s Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) confirmed that the cabinet approved a mechanism to expand humanitarian aid, aiming to increase supplies entering the territory while reducing reliance on international organizations such as the United Nations. Despite the announcement, logistical challenges remain, especially considering the widespread devastation in Gaza. Palestinian and UN officials stress that around 600 aid trucks are needed daily to meet the humanitarian demands—levels that existed before the conflict escalated.
Meanwhile, Israel’s cabinet is reportedly contemplating a full military takeover of Gaza for the first time in two decades, intensifying global calls for a ceasefire to alleviate the dire humanitarian conditions in the region.
Ongoing Conflict and Hunger in Sudan
The fighting in Sudan erupted in April 2023 when tensions between the Sudanese army and the RSF escalated over plans to merge their forces. The RSF initially seized significant territory, including Khartoum, but the army pushed them westward this year, leading to heavy fighting in al-Fashir. Refugee camps housing displaced persons are reportedly approaching famine conditions.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) warns that emergency funding for refugees in Uganda—many fleeing Sudan, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo will run out next month unless more resources are secured. Local healthcare workers describe hunger as a graver issue than ongoing shelling. One doctor, speaking anonymously for safety reasons, recounted how malnutrition afflicts children and adults alike, sometimes forcing even medical staff to go without meals.
Food supplies have been blocked or attacked by the RSF, pushing prices far beyond average levels. Some residents have resorted to consuming hay or ambaz, a feed made from peanut shells, which itself is now scarce.
