HSBC has launched its Sustainability Improvement Loan in Continental Europe, allowing eligible small and mid-market businesses to link loan pricing to changes in an external ESG score. The product uses ratings from recognised third-party providers such as EcoVadis, CDP or Inrate, with pricing adjusted according to whether a borrower’s ESG performance improves, worsens or remains within agreed thresholds.
Under the structure, companies may receive preferential pricing if their ESG rating improves in line with the agreed target range, while borrowing costs may rise if performance deteriorates. If the score remains within the agreed range, pricing may stay unchanged. HSBC says the model is intended to give smaller businesses a more proportionate route into sustainability-linked financing.

The Sustainability Improvement Loan is deliberately different from a conventional Sustainability-Linked Loan. HSBC says it is not designed to follow the full LMA, APLMA or LSTA sustainability-linked loan framework, which typically requires bespoke key performance indicators and more extensive structuring. Instead, the bank uses an external ESG rating as the reference point, reducing the complexity for companies that may not have the resources to build a customised KPI-linked financing structure.
The product can be used for general corporate purposes and may be available across a range of eligible lending and working-capital solutions, depending on the market and borrower profile. HSBC first introduced the Sustainability Improvement Loan in the UK in 2024 and has since expanded the offering into markets in Asia and the Middle East before bringing it to Continental Europe.
The European launch gives HSBC another sustainable finance product aimed specifically at smaller companies, which often face more limited access to sustainability expertise than larger corporates. The structure is designed to make ESG-linked borrowing more accessible while still creating a direct financial incentive for borrowers to improve their external sustainability rating over time.
