H&M has signed a VPPA with Lightsource bp for a new solar project in Texas, helping the company advance its clean energy goals and reduce carbon emissions by 155,000 metric tons annually.
H&M Group has signed a new virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) with solar project developer Lightsource bp, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability and clean energy goals. The agreement, part of a broader partnership initiated in 2021, enables the construction of new renewable energy infrastructure in Texas, specifically through the 125MW Second Division solar project in Brazoria County.
The solar project, expected to be operational by the end of 2024, will generate renewable energy that will significantly reduce carbon emissions by an estimated 155,000 metric tons annually. Additionally, the project will integrate agricultural practices, such as sheep grazing, and enhance biodiversity by planting site-specific grasses and vegetation under the solar panels.
H&M Group, which aims to source 100% renewable electricity by 2030 and reach net-zero emissions by 2040, is focusing on PPAs with new energy generation sources. The company targets at least 50% of its renewable electricity to come from agreements that support the construction of new energy capacity, further promoting grid diversification and sustainability.
Helen Brauner from Lightsource bp emphasized the importance of corporate energy buyers like H&M, whose sustainability efforts help drive the creation of low-carbon energy infrastructure that benefits both the environment and local economies.
