Greenwashing Accusations: ClientEarth Challenges BlackRock Over Fossil Fuel-Linked ‘Sustainable’ Funds

ClientEarth has filed a legal complaint against BlackRock, accusing the firm of misleading investors by labeling funds investing in fossil fuel companies as "sustainable."

Environmental law group ClientEarth has filed a complaint against BlackRock in France, accusing the investment giant of misleading customers by labeling funds as "sustainable" while continuing to invest in fossil fuel companies. The complaint, lodged with France's financial regulator, the Autorité des marchés financiers (AMF), alleges that BlackRock's actions undermine the integrity of the sustainable finance market.

ClientEarth claims BlackRock has invested over $1 billion into energy companies, including major oil firms such as TotalEnergies, Shell, BP, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, and Equinor, through 18 funds marketed as sustainable. While these firms have made some investments in renewable energy, the International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that only a small fraction, less than 3%, of their overall investments go toward renewables and electric mobility.

The environmental group argues that BlackRock's approach distorts competition and diverts capital from genuinely sustainable financial products. ClientEarth aims to push BlackRock to either change its marketing language or reallocate its so-called sustainable funds into projects more aligned with public perceptions of sustainability. The group also hopes the AMF will establish clearer guidelines for sustainable fund labeling to prevent future greenwashing.

This legal action comes amid broader debates about the role of fossil fuels in the global energy transition. BlackRock’s CEO has emphasized the need for a pragmatic approach to energy investments, arguing that balancing fossil fuel and renewable energy investments is necessary to ensure energy security. However, the International Energy Agency’s roadmap to net-zero calls for an immediate halt to new fossil fuel projects, raising questions about the long-term compatibility of such investments with global climate goals.

The AMF will now review the complaint and determine the next steps.
