The Green Climate Fund has approved $2.7 billion for climate projects in Egypt and other countries, aiming to boost climate resilience through green finance, agriculture, and water infrastructure.
The Green Climate Fund (GCF) has announced a major investment of $2.687 billion, allocated to three extensive multi-country climate programs: Greening Financial Systems, the Smart Resilient Agriculture Investment Fund, and the Resilient Water Infrastructure Expansion Facility. This financing aims to strengthen climate resilience and sustainable development in regions including Egypt, which will benefit significantly from these climate-centered initiatives.
The Greening Financial Systems program, with a budget of $1.295 billion, will be executed across 14 countries in Asia and Africa, providing nations like Egypt with funding tools such as soft loans and guarantees, along with a $100 million technical support grant. The program aims to enhance institutional capacity for developing green finance solutions, supporting projects aligned with the Paris Agreement, including sustainable energy, low-emission transport, food and water security, and resilient infrastructure.
Meanwhile, the Smart Resilient Agriculture Investment Fund, targeted at 10 African countries including Egypt, will deploy $130 million to support smallholder farmers. The fund offers farmers climate-resilient seeds, climate-related insurance, improved irrigation, and access to premium markets, aiming to build resilience within Egypt’s agricultural sector. This initiative supports Egypt's National Climate Change Strategy 2050, specifically its goals for climate adaptation and resilience.
The Resilient Water Infrastructure Expansion Facility will invest $1.262 billion in 14 nations, addressing water scarcity through infrastructure enhancements. With $258 million from GCF, this program will focus on sustainable water solutions critical to climate resilience.
