German promotional bank KfW has unveiled a €10 billion green bond programme for 2025, reaffirming its leadership in sustainable finance. The announcement came during its annual capital market press conference, where KfW outlined plans to raise €65-70 billion in capital markets next year, with green bonds accounting for approximately 15% of this total.
A Decade of Green Bond Leadership
KfW is celebrating 10 years in the green bond market. Since 2014, the bank has issued €82.8 billion through 136 transactions, establishing itself as a prominent player in sustainable finance. “Our particular strength is that we offer large-volume, liquid green bonds in euros. Green euro bonds from KfW are currently circulating in a volume of €46 billion, and we offer a liquid curve with long maturities, which institutional investors value in particular,” said Petra Wehlert, Head of Capital Markets at KfW Group.
Focus on Biodiversity
As part of its evolving Green Bond Framework, KfW has introduced biodiversity as a project category, which has garnered significant interest from international investors. The bank’s first international biodiversity financing operations are also being funded through green bonds. “Our Green Bonds thus continue to be an important instrument with which we sensitize and win over capital market participants for sustainability and the protection of biodiversity,” Wehlert added.
Embracing Digital Innovation
In addition to expanding its sustainability initiatives, KfW is advancing its adoption of digital technologies. Starting in 2025, central register securities will become standard for issuing euro benchmark bonds. This development follows the successful issuance of blockchain-based digital bonds in 2024. Tim Armbruster, Treasurer of KfW Group, remarked, “We are capitalizing on our market position and relevance in order to take the lead as a driver of innovation and contribute to shaping promising trends of the future.”
A Milestone in Sustainable Finance
The €10 billion green bond programme for 2025 highlights KfW’s continued commitment to sustainability and innovation. By incorporating biodiversity projects and embracing digitalization, KfW sets new benchmarks in the evolving landscape of green finance. With its decade-long expertise and forward-looking strategies, the bank is poised to remain a leader in sustainable funding.
