Google, Stripe, H&M, and other members of the Frontier Coalition have committed $80 million toward purchasing carbon credits to back cutting-edge carbon capture technologies. These investments aim to accelerate scalable and cost-effective solutions for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The Investment Breakdown:

CO280: Awarded $48 million to remove 224,500 metric tons of CO₂ between 2028 and 2030. Utilizing oil field carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology, CO280 targets emissions at paper mill smokestacks.

CREW: Secured $32.1 million to capture 71,878 tons of CO₂ using limestone filtration technology at wastewater treatment facilities.

Although the costs—$214 per ton for CO280 and $447 per ton for CREW—exceed the long-term target of $100 per ton, these early-stage investments aim to drive innovation and reduce future carbon removal costs.

Why It Matters:

Frontier’s approach addresses a critical challenge: scaling carbon capture technology to meet global decarbonization goals. While current methods are costly, they hold the potential to remove billions of tons of CO₂ annually. Frontier’s investment is a vital step toward achieving this vision.

Hannah Bebbington, Frontier’s head of deployment, stated, “We are really excited about the possibility for large industrial players to integrate carbon removal technologies and start to deliver carbon removal cheaply and at scale.”
