The Exelon Foundation has added two companies, Public Grid and Buckstop, to its Climate Change Investment Initiative, now in its seventh year of backing early-stage climate and energy startups. The programme operates under a $20 million commitment to climate-focused investment and entrepreneurship, targeting companies whose work can benefit Exelon's major service markets, including Atlantic City, Baltimore, Chicago, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. Investment amounts for the two new portfolio additions were not disclosed.
Public Grid works with property owners, managers and technology platforms representing more than 500,000 housing units nationwide, integrating utility enrollment and energy programme participation directly into the multifamily housing leasing process. That integration addresses a specific access barrier: programmes designed to lower energy costs, including community solar, demand response and energy efficiency initiatives, are often difficult for renters to discover or enrol in through conventional channels, meaning eligible households can miss out on savings simply because signing up requires separate action outside the standard leasing process. The company already has an established presence across Exelon's service footprint, where residents use the platform to activate utility accounts and access savings programmes.

Buckstop operates an asset valuation, urban mining and circularity platform that identifies opportunities to recover, reuse and recycle materials embedded within energy and industrial equipment, helping organisations understand the economic and material value contained in assets they might otherwise discard. As electrification and demand for critical minerals continue rising, recovering materials from existing infrastructure offers an alternative to relying entirely on new extraction and manufacturing, a distinction relevant to organisations facing tightening critical mineral supply chains.

Sunny Elebua, Exelon's chief strategy and sustainability officer, said keeping energy affordable while meeting growing demand was one of the defining challenges facing the industry, framing both new portfolio additions as practical, customer-focused innovation the programme was established to support. The Exelon Foundation is accepting new applications for the programme through September 2026, with law firm Katten providing in-kind legal services in support of the initiative.
