RepAir Carbon US Inc. and C-Questra have teamed up to launch the European Union’s first onshore Direct Air Capture and Storage (DACS) project in Grandpuits, France. This collaboration marks a significant milestone in Europe’s decarbonization efforts, aiming to reduce the continent’s reliance on costly and complex midstream and offshore carbon infrastructure.

“This is setting a new standard for efficient, scalable carbon removal in Europe,” stated Jean-Philippe Hiegel, Head of Strategy and Growth at RepAir Carbon. RepAir’s innovative technology, which reduces energy consumption by 70% compared to conventional DAC solutions, uses only 0.6 MWh per ton of CO2 captured—dramatically lower than the 2.5 MWh required by most competitors. This efficiency addresses a major barrier to widespread DACS adoption.

C-Questra, an independent carbon storage startup, will provide the essential expertise to store the captured CO2. “Our partnership with RepAir allows us to demonstrate Europe’s ability to mature onshore direct air capture and storage projects. This is important to balance the momentum created by the US Inflation Act and resurface Europe as a leader in the CDR space,” said Walid Sinno, Founder and CEO of C-Questra.

The project is strategically located in Île-de-France, where it will also explore local manufacturing opportunities, creating green jobs and setting the stage for similar DACS projects across Europe. By 2030, the goal is to remove 100,000 tons of CO2 from the atmosphere annually, with plans to scale up to megaton levels by 2035.

This groundbreaking project aligns with France’s new carbon capture and storage (CCS) strategy, which sets ambitious goals for CO2 removal by 2030. It is also poised to capitalize on European funding opportunities, such as the Innovation Fund, which has yet to support a Direct Air Capture project.

As RepAir Carbon continues to establish itself as a pioneer in the DAC space, this partnership not only advances European competitiveness in carbon removal but also paves the way for future innovation and sustainability.
