Electric vehicle sales across the European Union reached a record 1.64 million units in the first eight months of 2026, up 45% from the same period last year, according to a new report from Transport & Environment. Battery electric vehicles accounted for 22% of new-car sales between January and August, six percentage points higher than a year earlier, as automakers expanded their electric line-ups and introduced more affordable models.
Transport & Environment described 2026 as a pivotal year for electric vehicle availability, with the number of models on offer increasing by 50% in a single year. The wider choice is helping automakers reach buyers across more price points while also working towards EU vehicle emissions requirements. Volkswagen is among the manufacturers expanding its lower-cost EV range, including with the all-electric Polo.

European manufacturers continue to account for the largest share of available electric models. Carmakers from the region represented nearly 60% of the EV offering and added 16 models during the first half of 2026. Chinese manufacturers held a 21% share and introduced another 11 models, increasing competition as the European market moves beyond the early stages of electric vehicle adoption.

The sales growth has pushed EV uptake ahead of forecasts made earlier in the year. Transport & Environment had expected battery electric vehicles to reach a 23% share of the EU market for 2026 as a whole, while Rho Motion had forecast around 21% across Europe. The 22% share reached during the first eight months suggests the market is already approaching those full-year expectations as new models become available.
Higher fuel costs are also changing the economics for drivers of combustion-engine vehicles. The report said diesel prices have risen 38% since the start of the Iran conflict, adding around €30 to the cost of filling a 50-litre tank. While model availability and EU emissions targets remain important drivers of the shift, the widening difference in running costs could provide another incentive for consumers considering the move to electric vehicles.
