Energizer Unveils 100% Recyclable Plastic-Free Packaging for Batteries

Energizer debuts 100% recyclable plastic-free battery packaging, rolling out at Walmart in March 2025. This milestone supports sustainability, consumer convenience, and retail efficiency.

Energizer Holdings, a global leader in battery manufacturing, has announced a groundbreaking shift to plastic-free packaging for its Energizer battery portfolio, marking a significant step toward environmental sustainability.


The new 100% recyclable packaging not only aligns with growing consumer demand for renewable solutions but also reinforces Energizer’s commitment to environmental stewardship.


Lori Shambro, Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer at Energizer, shared:

“With a legacy of pioneering innovative solutions, advancing the sustainability of our packaging was a natural next step. Our new design meets the needs of consumers and retail partners while paving the way for a plastic-free future at Energizer Holdings.”


The transition will begin in March 2025, initially rolling out in Walmart stores and online before expanding to other North American retailers later in the year. Walmart, a key partner in this initiative, praised the move.


Tyler Lehr, Walmart’s Senior Vice President of General Merchandising, stated:

“This innovative packaging aligns with our mission to become a regenerative company. Partnering with Energizer helps us provide customers with more sustainable, convenient, and visually appealing solutions.”


Energizer anticipates that 90% of its North American battery portfolio will feature the new plastic-free packaging once the transition is complete. Designed to enhance the consumer experience, the paper-based packaging is easier to open, store, and recycle, while its slim design increases shelf capacity and reduces restocking time for retailers.


By integrating shelf-ready display trays, Energizer’s solution also improves operational efficiency for retail partners. The initiative is a major step in creating a more sustainable product ecosystem while meeting the demands of environmentally conscious consumers.
