EDP Renewables North America and Redwood Coast Energy Authority have celebrated the completion of Sandrini Energy Storage, a 92 megawatt, 368 megawatt-hour battery energy storage system in Kern County, California, with capacity to power the equivalent of more than 22,000 California homes. The project is co-located with the 300 MW Sandrini Solar site, from which Redwood Coast Energy Authority separately purchases 100 MW, and holds an energy storage service agreement covering 100 percent of the battery's capacity.
Pairing the storage system directly with the adjacent solar facility allows surplus solar generation produced during peak sunlight hours to be stored and dispatched later, when electricity demand is higher but solar output has already declined, a configuration intended to strengthen grid reliability and support California's broader clean energy goals by making solar generation available beyond the hours when the sun is actually shining.

The project is projected to generate more than $5 million in local revenue supporting public services and infrastructure including schools, roads, emergency services and parks. Construction of the storage system alone supported approximately 50 jobs, while the combined Sandrini Solar and Energy Storage development supported roughly 250 jobs during construction overall and is expected to generate more than $25 million in local tax revenue.

EDPR NA chief executive Sandhya Ganapathy framed the project within the company's broader positioning around energy storage transforming variable renewable power into reliable, around-the-clock electricity. The company currently operates approximately 1,230 MW of gross operating capacity across wind, solar and storage in California, powering the equivalent of more than 485,000 California homes, with California operations delivering roughly $154 million in cumulative economic impact statewide, including more than $41 million in local government revenue and more than $33 million in landowner payments. The company separately inaugurated Flatland Energy Storage, a 200 MW, 800 MWh battery system in Coolidge, Arizona, in June, extending its storage portfolio beyond California.
