Da Nang International Airport Terminal 2 Embeds ESG Standards into Infrastructure and Design

Da Nang International Airport Terminal 2 Embeds ESG Standards into Infrastructure and Design

Terminal 2 at Da Nang International Airport is positioning itself as a benchmark for sustainable aviation infrastructure through targeted environmental upgrades and ESG-aligned operational strategies. Operated by Da Nang International Terminal Investment and Operation JSC, the terminal has recently commissioned an advanced wastewater treatment system designed to strengthen environmental compliance while enhancing long-term operational efficiency.

All wastewater generated by terminal operations is routed through a closed piping network to a high-performance treatment facility. The system combines Anoxic-Oxic biotechnology with Membrane Bioreactor technology to remove organic contaminants and microorganisms. This integrated approach improves purification efficiency while maintaining stable treatment performance across varying load conditions.

The installation incorporates hollow fiber membrane technology supplied by Mitsubishi of Japan, reinforcing durability and consistent output quality over extended operating cycles. Odors generated during treatment are fully contained within a sealed-loop process, ensuring that surrounding air quality remains within regulatory thresholds.

Circular Water Reuse as a Functional Asset

The treated water complies with Vietnam’s QCVN 14:2008/BTNMT environmental standard and is not discharged as waste. Instead, it is repurposed for cleaning and irrigation functions within the terminal complex. A notable feature of this circular approach is the reuse of reclaimed water to sustain a 50-square-meter ornamental fish pond located at the center of the terminal.

This “Circular Ecological Fish Pond” model demonstrates how environmental infrastructure can serve both operational and experiential functions. By embedding water reuse into visible public spaces, the terminal connects sustainability practices with passenger awareness, reinforcing the broader ESG narrative through tangible implementation.

Biophilic Design Integrated into Passenger Experience

Beyond wastewater management, Terminal 2 integrates biophilic design principles across its architectural framework. The interior layout emphasizes greenery, natural light, and optimized airflow, creating a built environment that reflects ecological sensitivity while enhancing passenger comfort.

Natural elements are embedded throughout waiting areas and circulation spaces, aiming to reduce travel-related stress and support a more restorative airport experience. This approach aligns environmental performance with social considerations, recognizing passenger well-being as a component of ESG integration.

ESG Strategy Embedded in Corporate Direction

According to Deputy General Director Do Trong Hau, the introduction of the recycled-water aquarium represents more than a design element. It signals a structured commitment to sustainable development consistent with global Environmental, Social, and Governance standards.

By combining technical wastewater innovation, resource circularity, and human-centered architectural design, Terminal 2 is advancing a model where environmental infrastructure, passenger experience, and corporate governance objectives intersect. The initiative reflects a broader strategic orientation toward sustainable growth within Vietnam’s aviation sector, positioning Da Nang as an example of ESG integration at the infrastructure level.
