Cowboy Clean Fuels Sells First Durable Carbon Removal Credits

Cowboy Clean Fuels has completed its first sale of durable carbon removal credits, part of a Salesforce-backed purchase arranged through Milkywire, with delivery scheduled for 2026, marking the Wyoming climate-tech company's entry into the carbon dioxide removal market. The deal is one piece of Salesforce's broader pledge to contract 100 million dollars in durable carbon removal by 2030. Cowboy Clean Fuels generates the credits through a biomass carbon removal and storage process in the Powder River Basin, where agricultural processing residues are injected into depleted coalbed methane reservoirs and broken down by indigenous microorganisms, producing renewable natural gas while permanently binding carbon dioxide to coal surfaces for more than 100 years.

 

The company quantifies removal under its patented BiCRS+RNG methodology, developed to the ISO 14064-2:2019 standard and certified under the Absolute Carbon Standard from Absolute Climate. Credits are issued through the C-Capsule registry operated by Evident, part of Xpansiv, and the company's Triangle Unit project has undergone independent technical review by Climate Vault Solutions. Cowboy Clean Fuels describes its pathway as the only patented process currently available to buyers that combines geologic carbon storage with renewable gas production from the same operation.

The project reuses existing coalbed methane infrastructure and taps Wyoming's established energy workforce, an approach the company positions as economic diversification for Campbell County rather than new industrial development on undisturbed land. Cowboy Clean Fuels is continuing to develop additional projects across the Powder River Basin and says verified credits are listed on-registry and available for immediate purchase as it works to expand supply of both carbon removal credits and carbon-neutral renewable natural gas.
