Azerbaijan’s Mukhtar Babayev, COP29 president, unveils final climate-focused pledges aimed at accelerating global climate action, just weeks before the UN summit.
Azerbaijan’s Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, Mukhtar Babayev, who presides over COP29, revealed the final texts for nine key climate pledges and declarations on Monday. These documents, released ahead of the upcoming UN climate summit in Baku from November 11-22, are designed to complement the official negotiations, serving as “vital tools” to push global climate efforts forward.
The texts provide pathways for action in various sectors, focusing on areas such as energy storage, low-carbon hydrogen production, and water security. They also outline guidance for green energy zones, methane reduction, and the integration of digital technologies to achieve climate goals.
Although not part of the formal negotiation process at COP29, these pledges are intended to foster collaboration across industries and governments to promote climate-resilient cities and enhance sustainable investment. One key initiative, the “COP29 Truce Appeal,” inspired by the Olympic Truce, calls for unity and cooperation, with support from over 127 countries and 1,100 non-state actors.
Babayev emphasized the importance of these pledges in guiding financial flows and building a shared responsibility to address the climate crisis.
