Climeworks Reports Doubled Capture Performance, Halved Costs at Mammoth

Climeworks has announced significant performance improvements at Mammoth, its direct air capture and storage facility in Iceland, based on insights gained from 18 months of operation. Upgrades to the company's sorbent and plant design have more than doubled CO2 capture performance in upgraded collector containers under real-world operating conditions, with the first upgraded containers now achieving their expected design performance.

 

Operating costs at the facility have been reduced by more than 50 percent over the same 18-month period, a reduction the company attributes to the same round of sorbent and design upgrades driving the capture performance gains. Climeworks frames the results as demonstrating how operating large-scale direct air capture facilities alongside a dedicated innovation centre can accelerate technology improvements, reduce costs, and help validate the next generation of direct air capture systems more broadly.

Climeworks co-founder and co-CEO Jan Wurzbacher detailed the improvements and their implications for the company's future technology development in a separate published article, describing what the company has learned from operating Mammoth and how those insights are shaping ongoing development of its direct air capture systems.
