Nine Canadian Fleets Add Dozens of Natural Gas Trucks as Cummins X15N Engine Gains Traction

Clean Energy Fuels has announced new fueling and maintenance agreements with nine fleets across Western Canada, adding dozens of natural gas trucks spanning refuse collection, freight, logistics and oilfield services. The expansion is tied to growing adoption of Cummins' 15-litre X15N engine, alongside newly opened compressed natural gas stations in Grande Prairie and Chilliwack, operated through the company's partnership with Canadian energy producer Tourmaline. Clean Energy now operates five stations across Alberta and British Columbia, in Edmonton, Calgary, Kamloops, Grande Prairie and Chilliwack.

 

Why the Cummins X15N Engine Is the Real Enabling Technology

 

Much of this expansion is attributed directly to confidence in a specific piece of hardware rather than natural gas technology broadly. Cody Brookwell, Clean Energy's director of sales and business development, said the X15N engine "closes the technology gap" for fleets that haul heavy loads and rack up substantial annual mileage, language suggesting earlier-generation natural gas engines had struggled to match diesel performance specifically in demanding, high-mileage heavy-duty applications. Several of the deployments described in the release involve genuinely demanding use cases: Sniper Services is deploying a tri-drive vehicle rated to haul up to 140,000 pounds in Alberta's oil patch, and Trican Well Service, one of Canada's largest oilfield services companies, is entering the natural gas market for the first time with three X15N-powered trucks.

That pattern, established fleets in traditionally diesel-dominated, heavy-haul sectors making their first natural gas commitments specifically once the X15N became available, suggests the engine addresses a genuine prior technical limitation rather than fleets simply becoming more environmentally motivated. Nortrans Freight Management's general manager Alexander Norman described investing more than $3 million CAD in new CNG tractors as the largest capital investment in the company's 35-year history, explicitly framing the X15N as delivering "economics, scalability, practicality" alongside environmental considerations, an ordering that suggests cost and operational performance are driving these decisions as much as, or more than, emissions reduction alone.

Why Cost, Not Just Emissions, Appears to Be the Primary Driver

 

Brookwell stated that natural gas costs 40 to 50 percent less than diesel, and framed high fleet utilisation of that cheaper, more predictable fuel as accelerating both "the environmental benefits and payback on the upfront investment," language that positions cost savings and environmental benefit as parallel outcomes of the same underlying fuel switch rather than treating emissions reduction as the primary motivation. Several fleet executives echoed that framing directly: Ed Sherbinski of Mullen Dedicated Logistics praised the X15N for matching diesel performance and reliability, while Lorenzo Donini of Integrity Waste Solutions credited "reliable, diesel-like fueling" as the reason for continued CNG fleet expansion, both emphasising operational parity with diesel rather than environmental differentiation as the deciding factor.

That framing matters for understanding what is actually driving this wave of adoption: it appears to be natural gas reaching cost and performance parity with diesel in heavy-duty applications, rather than fleets accepting a performance trade-off in exchange for emissions reduction, a distinction that affects how durable this adoption trend might prove if the cost differential between natural gas and diesel narrows in the future.

Why the RNG-Versus-CNG Distinction Matters Environmentally

 

Clean Energy's own corporate description positions the company as North America's largest provider of renewable natural gas, fuel produced by capturing methane from organic waste sources such as dairy farms, a genuinely low-carbon or even carbon-negative fuel pathway depending on the feedstock. However, the fuel actually described throughout this release is CNG, compressed natural gas, a term that applies equally to conventional fossil natural gas compressed for vehicle use and to renewable natural gas compressed in the same way, and the release does not specify which feedstock supplies these particular Western Canada stations.

That distinction is not a minor technicality: fossil-derived CNG offers meaningfully lower particulate and some criteria pollutant emissions compared with diesel but does not deliver the same lifecycle greenhouse gas reduction that genuine RNG, sourced from captured methane that would otherwise escape into the atmosphere, can provide. Without clarity on the specific gas source feeding these stations, the environmental benefit being marketed to these fleets could range from modest to substantial depending on whether the fuel is fossil or renewable in origin, a distinction the release's promotional framing does not clarify.

 

What Comes Next

 

GFL Environmental, Environmental e360 and Prairie Waste Solutions, all longstanding users of natural gas technology in the waste and refuse sector, continue expanding their fleets alongside newer entrants like Reimer Brothers, deploying natural gas trucks for the first time. Whether this wave of adoption continues at its current pace as more heavy-duty fleets test the X15N engine's performance under demanding operating conditions, and whether Clean Energy clarifies the actual renewable content of the gas supplied through this specific Western Canada network, will determine both the commercial durability of this trend and how accurately its environmental benefits can be assessed.
