Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners has entered the Italian biomethane market through Via Verde, a new platform comprising a development pipeline of 20 projects across regions including Lombardy, Abruzzo and Campania. The investment has reached final investment decision through CIP’s Advanced Bioenergy Fund II, which focuses on biogas and biomethane projects using agricultural waste and other sustainable feedstocks.
Each Via Verde plant is expected to process around 60,000 to 100,000 tonnes of agricultural waste annually. Once all 20 projects are operational, the platform is expected to produce approximately 1 TWh of biomethane a year, equivalent to the annual gas consumption of around 60,000 Italian households.
The investment is the first made through Advanced Bioenergy Fund II and gives CIP a foothold in Italy’s growing biomethane market. The platform is intended to increase domestic renewable gas production, reduce reliance on imported fossil gas and support Italy’s energy security and decarbonisation goals.

CIP is positioning Via Verde around the combination of local feedstock, renewable gas production and supportive policy conditions. The company expects the platform to create local jobs while helping Italy scale biomethane capacity towards its 2030 targets.
“Via Verde marks our entry into one of Europe’s most attractive biomethane markets, giving us a strong foothold as Italy scales towards its 2030 biomethane targets,” said Andreas F. Brandt, Partner at CIP. He added that CIP plans to use its bioenergy experience to support the local team and expand the platform over time.
