Canada Sets 35% Emissions Reduction Cap for Oil & Gas Sector by 2030

Canada targets a 35% emissions reduction for oil and gas by 2030, implementing a cap-and-trade system to curb pollution while supporting cleaner growth in the sector.

Canada has announced a new emissions reduction target for its oil and gas industry, aiming to cut sector emissions by 35% from 2019 levels by 2030. The initiative emphasizes pollution reduction over production cuts and is part of Canada’s broader commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

The government’s cap-and-trade approach allocates emissions allowances to oil and gas facilities, enabling companies to buy credits from more efficient operators or contribute to a decarbonization fund if they exceed emissions limits. Facilities that reinvest in cleaner technologies will be incentivized, creating opportunities for emissions offsets and industry growth.

While the sector expects a 16% production increase by 2030, Canada plans to meet this demand with cleaner operations, allocating $12.5 billion in tax credits to boost carbon capture and methane reduction projects. Canada currently hosts one-sixth of the world’s large-scale carbon capture facilities, enhancing its position as a leader in sustainable energy practices.

The proposal, open for public input until January 8, 2025, has stirred mixed responses. Industry groups express concerns about economic impacts, while environmental advocates are urging a faster implementation timeline. Finalized regulations are anticipated by 2025.
