Extreme Heat Pushes Fire Risk to Critical Level. Severe bushfires are burning across southeast Australia, with large parts of Victoria placed under evacuation orders as authorities warn of catastrophic fire danger. Uncontrolled fires have swept through bushland in the state’s southeast, fuelled by extreme temperatures, strong winds, and highly volatile conditions.

Temperatures exceeded 40°C in several areas, creating an environment where fires can spread rapidly and unpredictably. Emergency services confirmed that at least two buildings have already been destroyed, as firefighters work to contain multiple fronts that continue to expand.

Major Blazes Expand Near Longwood and Walwa

Two of the most dangerous fires are burning near the towns of Longwood and Walwa. The Longwood fire has grown beyond 25,000 hectares, while the Walwa blaze has consumed more than 10,000 hectares so far. The Walwa fire has become particularly hazardous after generating its own fire-driven weather system, producing a pyrocumulonimbus cloud that brought lightning and thunder. Officials warned that such conditions significantly increase the risk of new ignitions.

As winds are expected to strengthen and temperatures remain elevated, fire authorities have cautioned that containment efforts will become increasingly difficult.

Evacuations Ordered as Catastrophic Rating Declared

Residents in dozens of towns have been told to evacuate as conditions deteriorate. Friday has been declared a “catastrophic” fire danger day, the highest rating under Australia’s fire warning system. Authorities stressed that under these conditions, even well-prepared properties may not be defensible.

Jason Heffernan, Chief Officer of the Country Fire Authority, described the situation as extremely dangerous and urged communities in high-risk zones to leave early and follow official instructions without delay.

Echoes of Black Summer as Disruptions Widen

The unfolding crisis has drawn comparisons with Australia’s Black Summer fires of 2019 to 2020, which claimed 33 lives and destroyed thousands of homes across the southeast. As a precaution, around 450 schools in Victoria are scheduled to close, regional train services have been suspended, and total fire bans have been extended statewide. Emergency agencies warned that the combination of heat, wind, and dry vegetation mirrors some of the most destructive fire conditions seen in recent decades.

Heatwave Spreads Beyond Australia

The heatwave driving the bushfires is also affecting neighboring regions. Across the Tasman Sea, New Zealand has issued heat alerts as unusually high temperatures spread along parts of the eastern coastline and the northern South Island. Meteorological agencies in both countries have advised residents to limit outdoor activity, remain vigilant, and prepare for worsening conditions.

As the heatwave persists, authorities continue to stress that early action and adherence to emergency guidance are critical to reducing the risk to life and property.
